Artist Kehinde Wiley designed a redesigned Moon Person trophy for the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards; the statue at the space center and the award trophy were related but distinct objects.
What MTV revealed in 2021
The unveiling took place on August 1, 2021, at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. MTV presented it as part of the network’s 40th-anniversary celebration. Contemporary coverage connected the public unveiling to the redesigned trophy intended for that year’s Video Music Awards winners.
The two objects served different purposes: the large-scale statue marked the anniversary with a public unveiling at the space center, while the trophy was an award for VMA winners. The available reports do not establish that the visitor-complex statue was the same physical object presented at the ceremony.
Who designed the new Moon Person?
Artist Kehinde Wiley designed the redesigned Moon Person trophy. MTV’s explanation of the botanical imagery was reported by Creative Exchange Agency on August 2, 2021: “Kehinde Wiley’s Moon Person sculpture represents inclusivity and diversity marked by the historical, environmental and nature relevance of the botanicals.” This is MTV’s stated interpretation of the work, rather than an independent assessment.

Why the unveiling was tied to MTV’s anniversary
The 2021 reveal linked a familiar VMA symbol with MTV’s 40th-anniversary celebration. Associated Press coverage quoted MTV Entertainment President and CEO Chris McCarthy describing the generation the redesign was meant to connect with: “Gen Z is by far one of the most interesting, incredibly creative and optimistic generations.” That is McCarthy’s characterization, as quoted by the Associated Press.
What is known about the statue today
The contemporary reports establish the 2021 unveiling and design context, but do not say where the large-scale statue is now or whether visitors can still see it. They also do not establish that official consumer replicas or related merchandise were sold. The event is documented as a specific anniversary unveiling, not proof of a permanent display or a purchase opportunity.
