The Grim Reaper traditionally carries a scythe. “Scythe” names the agricultural tool, not a weapon with a separate, established proper name.
Why does the Grim Reaper carry a scythe?
A scythe is a long-handled implement used to cut crops. In death imagery, it evokes harvesting: the Reaper appears to cut down human lives as a farmer cuts grain. That is a useful way to interpret the symbol, not proof of one definitive origin story.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art connects the imagery with overlapping classical and Christian motifs. In a discussion of a historical funeral-sleigh design, the Museum describes “a statue of Chronos as the Grim Reaper wielding his scythe.” This is one documented artistic representation; it does not mean Chronos, Cronus, and the Grim Reaper are simply the same figure.
Is the scythe a specially named weapon?
No separate proper name is established for it in the sources cited here. The conventional answer is the object’s ordinary name: a scythe. The Metropolitan Museum’s collection includes Robert Sargent Austin’s 1932–33 engraving titled Man with Scythe (The Reaper), another documented example of the familiar association.

How is a scythe different from a sickle?
Both are agricultural cutting tools, but a scythe has a long handle and a blade suited to cutting vegetation while standing; a sickle is a smaller, hand-held tool. The Metropolitan Museum’s account of medieval harvesting says the scythe supplanted the sickle in the 12th and 13th centuries and later came into use for grain. Their shared agricultural context helps explain why a harvesting implement works as a symbol of death.
What does the historical evidence establish?
Museum records document examples of the Reaper carrying a scythe, including the Met’s 1932–33 engraving and its account of the Chronos figure on a funeral-sleigh design. These examples confirm the association, but they do not establish when the image first appeared or provide a complete timeline of its development.
