What Is the Difference Between Nosferatu and Dracula?

Dracula is Stoker’s 1897 novel; Nosferatu is a film tradition rooted in its unauthorized 1922 adaptation, which transformed Count Dracula into Count Orlok.

Dracula is Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel and the name of its vampire count. Nosferatu is best known as F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film, an unauthorized and substantially altered adaptation of Stoker’s story. Its vampire is Count Orlok—not Dracula unchanged under a different name. Robert Eggers’s 2024 Nosferatu is a separate later film centered on Orlok.

How are Nosferatu and Dracula connected?

Stoker’s novel came first. Murnau’s Nosferatu borrowed its broad story but changed names, characters, setting, and plot details. The film’s legal trouble over that unauthorized adaptation helped make its relationship to Dracula part of its history. The British Film Institute describes the 1922 film as an adaptation of Stoker’s novel, while its educational guide outlines the changes (BFI: “Nosferatu (1922)”; BFI educational guide).

That makes Orlok and Dracula counterparts within an adaptation, but not identical characters. The names refer to different works and versions: Stoker’s count in the novel, Orlok in Murnau’s film, and later screen interpretations that draw on one or both traditions.

What changes between Stoker’s novel and the 1922 film?

Feature Dracula (1897) Nosferatu (1922)
Work and medium Bram Stoker’s novel. F. W. Murnau’s German silent film.
Vampire Count Dracula. Count Orlok, a reworked counterpart to Dracula.
Key woman character Mina. Ellen, replacing Mina in the film’s altered story.
Setting The story includes England and London. The action is shifted to German locations.
Distinctive plot element The novel’s vampire-hunting story. Rats aboard Orlok’s ship bring plague; the BFI identifies the plague theme as the film’s main plot innovation.

The adaptation also reduces or omits characters, including Van Helsing. These changes make the 1922 film more than a simple renaming of Stoker’s cast (HISTORY’s account of the film and its origins).

How do Count Orlok and Count Dracula look and behave differently?

Stoker’s Dracula is more humanized than Murnau’s creature, but it is misleading to picture the novel’s count as exactly the polished, tuxedoed vampire familiar from later screen versions. Stage and film adaptations helped shape that popular image (PBS: “The Vampire in Popular Culture”).

In the 1922 film, actor Max Schreck’s Orlok is bald, gaunt, bulbous, and frighteningly inhuman. The British Film Institute contrasts him with the “suave, moustachioed count” of Stoker’s novel and describes his emaciated fingers and looming shadows (BFI: “Nosferatu (1922)”). That stark visual design is one of the clearest reasons viewers distinguish Orlok from Dracula.

How do their endings differ?

In Stoker’s novel, Dracula is killed by the people pursuing him. In Murnau’s 1922 film, Ellen keeps Orlok occupied until dawn; sunlight kills him. The sunlight ending is specific to that film’s version of the story, not a detail to assume for every Dracula or Nosferatu adaptation (PBS; HISTORY).

Does the 2024 Nosferatu tell the same story as the 1922 film?

No. Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu (2024) is a separate feature film, not a rerelease of Murnau’s silent work. It again centers on Count Orlok and belongs to the later film tradition associated with Nosferatu. Focus Features describes the film and its cast on its official page (Focus Features: Nosferatu).

Universal Pictures At Home lists the 2024 film at 2 hours 13 minutes and identifies 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. Those are the distributor’s listed details, not a runtime or availability claim for the 1922 film (Universal Pictures At Home: Nosferatu).

Which one should you watch or read first?

  • Start with Stoker’s Dracula if you want the original novel and a direct reference point for the later adaptations. The public-domain text is available from Project Gutenberg.
  • Watch Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu to see how the story was transformed into a silent German film, including its Orlok design and plague plot.
  • Watch Eggers’s 2024 Nosferatu as a distinct modern film in the Orlok tradition; do not treat it as the same cut or version as Murnau’s film.
