Aamis is a 2019 Assamese-language film about a married doctor and a younger researcher whose shared interest in food draws them into an intimate relationship. Set in present-day Guwahati, it begins as a restrained romance and gradually moves into taboo and psychological horror. Its food motif makes appetite—both literal and emotional—the story’s central tension.
What happens in Aamis?
Nirmali (Lima Das) is a married doctor whose husband is often away. Sumon (Arghadeep Baruah), a younger researcher studying regional food and meat-eating traditions, meets her through their shared curiosity about food. Rather than following a conventional courtship, their connection grows through conversations and meals.
As the pair seek increasingly unusual meat dishes, their closeness takes on a meaning neither can easily control. The film’s final act includes a major shock; explaining it would spoil the turn, so this overview leaves the precise development undisclosed.
Why is food so important to the story?
Food is both the practical basis for Nirmali and Sumon to spend time together and the film’s governing metaphor. Their interest in what people eat lets the story explore appetite, desire, restraint, and the boundaries society draws around what is acceptable. The romance and the food motif become increasingly difficult to separate as the relationship changes.

Is Aamis a horror movie?
It is best approached as a romantic drama that gradually draws on psychological horror and the macabre, rather than as a conventional romance or a straightforward horror film. Its early scenes build patiently; the unsettling elements gather as the story progresses. Tribeca’s 2019 festival archive describes a shocking third-act turn, while writer-director Bhaskar Hazarika has said he deliberately set out to confound genre expectations.
Where is the film set, and what does its setting add?
Aamis is set in contemporary Guwahati. Hazarika said the story could have been placed in another Indian city, but he chose an Assamese setting for the cultural context he wanted to explore. The location gives the characters’ interest in regional food a specific social texture rather than treating it as a generic backdrop.

What did director Bhaskar Hazarika intend?
In a 2019 interview with Scroll.in, Hazarika described the film as an attempt to provoke viewers and engage their empathy. He called it “all about feel” and said it was designed to “titillate the vast untapped reservoirs of empathy in their hearts.” He also described the script as “acutely self-conscious” because it deliberately confounds genre expectations. These are the director’s stated aims, not a single required interpretation of the film.
In a 2019 interview with The Indian Express, Hazarika said Aamis was not autobiographical. He explained that he wanted to unsettle audiences and challenge idealized depictions of human beings.
