That is a convention of D&D’s lore, not a rule that fixes every dragon’s morality. Outside D&D, and outside any single fictional setting, dragon colors carry no universal moral meaning, so the answer depends on which lore you mean.
The D&D answer
D&D Beyond’s article The Commoner’s Guide to Surviving Dragon Attacks uses the familiar shorthand that metallic dragons are good-associated. The five metallic colors are:
- Gold
- Silver
- Bronze
- Copper
- Brass
The same article sets the chromatic dragons against them as the evil-associated group. Chromatic dragons are the familiar red, blue, green, black, and white dragons of the game.
Why the shorthand is not a moral rule
The article warns against treating the shorthand as absolute: “A chromatic dragon can be good and a metallic dragon can be evil.” Color tells you which family a dragon belongs to and what tendencies that family usually shows. It does not settle the dragon’s character. A gold dragon can be a villain, and a red dragon can be an ally. Use the color as a starting point, and let the individual dragon’s actions decide the rest.

The two D&D color families compared

Outside D&D, color meanings depend on the tradition
Other fantasy books, games, and cultures assign dragon colors differently. A general overview of dragon symbolism notes that interpretations vary by culture and by fictional setting, and that Western fantasy associations are only one set among several. Because of this, no hue can be labeled good everywhere on color alone. Red or gold in one tradition does not automatically carry the meaning it has in D&D.
That overview is a secondary survey, so it does not establish detailed claims about specific cultural traditions. For those, go to a primary source from the tradition itself, such as a folklore collection, or to the rulebook or canon of the work you are reading.

Deciding what color means in your own story
If you are writing your own dragons, color can work as a signal, but only if you define what it signals. Readers will accept a color code when the story makes it consistent.
- Decide what the color signals: moral alignment, an element or ability, or nothing beyond appearance.
- Write that rule into your setting notes or glossary before you draft the scenes where it matters.
- Apply it consistently. If a metallic-style dragon betrays the party, show the reason, so the exception reads as character rather than a mistake.
Presenting invented color symbolism as established folklore misleads readers, so attribute any invented convention to your own world.
