The Arthur fist meme is a close-up of Arthur character Arthur Read clenching his fist. It signals frustration or anger being held in rather than openly expressed; a caption usually explains what has provoked the reaction.
What the Arthur fist meme means
The clenched fist conveys a moment of contained irritation: someone is annoyed, but keeping the reaction in check. The image leaves the specific cause open, so captions pair it with everyday aggravations to make the reaction relatable. The same image can therefore fit many situations without changing its basic meaning.
Where the image came from
The frame comes from “Arthur’s Big Hit,” an episode of the PBS cartoon Arthur. Know Your Meme dates the episode to September 6, 1999, and identifies the scene as Arthur clenching his fist after his sister D.W. breaks his model airplane. Know Your Meme’s entry traces the later meme to a Twitter post by @AlmostJT on July 27, 2016, which described the image as relatable. The archive reports that the original tweet has been deleted, so that post’s date and attribution are based on its account rather than a surviving original.
How it became a reaction image
The fist is instantly readable as anger, while its restrained pose suggests someone trying not to lose their temper. Captions provide the situation—an irritating comment, setback, or small daily annoyance—and the image supplies the unspoken reaction. In 2016, the fist circulated amid a broader wave of Arthur stills and remixes; The Ringer’s account of that wave also discusses the show’s Comic Creator.

What WGBH said about the memes
In August 2016, a WGBH spokesperson told TIME: “We appreciate the memes that have been created and shared in good fun.” The spokesperson added: “We are, however, disappointed by the few that are outside of good taste.” TIME did not name the spokesperson. The response welcomed playful uses while drawing a line at memes considered in poor taste.
