A Brazilian Blowout is a branded salon hair-smoothing treatment designed to reduce frizz and make hair easier to style. The manufacturer says its Original and FREE treatments can last up to 12 weeks, while EXPRESS can last up to four weeks. Those are brand estimates, not guaranteed results or independently measured averages. A Brazilian Blowout does not necessarily permanently straighten hair.
What a Brazilian Blowout does
The Original treatment is marketed to smooth hair and improve manageability while allowing some clients to wear their hair curly or wavy, depending on hair type and the service performed. Frizz reduction and easier styling are not the same as permanent straightening. Results vary.
“Brazilian Blowout” is a brand with different services, not a precise generic name for every smoothing treatment. Formulations and terminology vary, and the available sources do not establish that every Brazilian Blowout is technically equivalent to every treatment called a keratin treatment.
How long each Brazilian Blowout treatment lasts

These figures describe the brand’s advertised durations; they do not establish how long a typical client’s results last. The sources do not establish a universal effect of washing frequency or show that any third-party shampoo guarantees a particular duration.

Aftercare and washing after the service
Aftercare directions differ by treatment. For FREE, the brand recommends its Deep Conditioning Masque for the first three to four washes and lists its Anti-Frizz Shampoo, Anti-Frizz Conditioner, and Ionic Bonding Spray as aftercare. Original’s stated duration is tied to the brand’s Açai aftercare line. Follow the stylist’s directions for the exact product used rather than assuming one routine applies to every service.
The manufacturer says clients receiving Original or EXPRESS may wash their hair immediately after leaving the salon. Its FREE FAQ also says clients may wash, exercise, or put their hair up the same day. Confirm the instructions with your stylist, since they depend on the specific treatment.

Does a Brazilian Blowout contain formaldehyde?
There is no safe blanket answer based on the brand name alone. The manufacturer describes FREE as formulated without formaldehyde and as using a different smoothing system. That claim about one named product does not establish the ingredients or emissions of every Brazilian Blowout service—or of other smoothing products.
The FDA warns that some heated hair-smoothing products may release formaldehyde gas. It advises consumers to look for ingredient names including formaldehyde, formalin, and methylene glycol. The FDA says potential health risks rise with exposure duration and concentration; reported reactions include eye irritation, headache or dizziness, respiratory symptoms, nausea, chest pain, vomiting, and rash. OSHA’s hazard alert describes historical air tests that found formaldehyde levels above OSHA limits in salons using Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution, which was labeled “formaldehyde free.” The alert also reports historical hazard-label and safety-data-sheet violations. The FDA says it issued two warning letters to GIB, LLC dba Brazilian Blowout and Van Tibolli Beauty Corp. citing safety and labeling violations, and that both companies took steps to correct the cited violations. The agency cautions that the letters are not a broad evaluation of every hair-smoothing product. What to ask the salon before booking
- Which exact treatment and product will the stylist use?
- Can the salon provide the product’s ingredient list and safety data sheet?
- Does the product contain or release formaldehyde-related ingredients when heated?
- Has the stylist been trained to use this specific product?
- What ventilation safeguards are in place during the service?
- What aftercare and post-service instructions apply to this treatment?
The FDA recommends asking about ingredients, the safety data sheet, stylist training, and ventilation. It discourages consumers from buying these products for home application and advises reading ingredient labels.
