Its story begins in the 23rd century and eventually reaches the 32nd, but its central concern is not just where the ship goes: it is how people understand themselves, one another and the future they are trying to build.
What is Star Trek: Discovery about?
At its broadest, Discovery follows a Starfleet crew confronting unfamiliar worlds, life forms and crises. The official series description pairs that exploratory mission with Burnham’s personal journey: understanding the alien begins with understanding oneself. That pairing helps explain the series’ emphasis on both large-scale science-fiction stakes and the decisions, relationships and inner lives of its characters.
The show is complete: Paramount Global Content lists five seasons and 65 episodes. Its story also changes eras, carrying the crew from the 23rd century into the 32nd. This gives the series room to move beyond its early place in Star Trek chronology and ask what becomes of the Federation and its ideals far in the future.
Why does the series keep asking what it is about?
Discovery is a Star Trek story, but its creators have described it as a series with its own identity rather than an attempt to satisfy every possible preference among franchise viewers. In a March 2024 interview, executive producer and co-creator Alex Kurtzman said, “I believe really strongly that every Star Trek show needs to have its own very unique identity.” That is a statement of creative intent, not a guarantee that every viewer will agree with the show’s choices.

The series’ identity is also tied to its interest in self-knowledge and connection. In the same interview, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise said the final season explored “very big things — where we come from, things like that.” She was describing that season’s themes, not offering a single explanation for all five seasons.
How does Discovery’s story change over five seasons?
The series does not stay in one era or one unchanging situation. The official StarTrek.com retrospective describes the crew’s journey from the 23rd century to the 32nd. That shift changes the context of the show’s exploration: later, the crew encounters a future in which the Federation and the principles it represents must be reconsidered.
Rank #2
The series returned Star Trek to television in 2017, after the franchise’s previous television run had ended in 2005, according to the StarTrek.com retrospective. Early showrunner Aaron Harberts described the first season as serialized, with episodes working like chapters in a novel. The series’ larger arc spans multiple seasons, but that description of season one should not be mistaken for a complete account of how every later season is structured.
Who and what does the series put at its center?
Burnham is the central character, but the story also depends on the people serving alongside her. Paradise has said the finale needed to resolve individual character arcs as well as plot threads. That focus on the ensemble helps connect the ship’s missions to the show’s wider questions about trust, belonging and how people respond to the unknown.
Discovery also brought a new lead perspective to the franchise. In the official retrospective, Sonequa Martin-Green discussed the significance of being the first Black woman to lead a Star Trek series and later to serve as its captain. Wilson Cruz spoke about the value of visibility for communities that had wanted to see themselves in the franchise. These are the actors’ accounts of the show’s representation and impact, rather than a claim that all viewers share one response.
What is the final season and finale about?
The official CBS Studios description frames season five as a mystery: Burnham and the crew pursue an ancient power while dangerous rivals seek the same prize. The season’s adventure gives the crew a concrete mission, while the questions raised by that mission continue the series’ interest in what people can know and what they choose to do with what they find.

Paradise said the team learned during editing that the season finale would also serve as the series finale. The episode therefore had to complete the season’s story, provide an ending for the series and bring the characters’ arcs to a close. She also said the team worked to address the connection to the short film “Calypso” in a way that could be satisfying both for viewers who had seen it and for those who had not.
The ending’s purpose is not simply to provide a lore explanation. Paradise discussed the emotional payoff and Burnham’s choice concerning the Progenitors’ technology; she also described Culber’s acceptance that some questions cannot yet be answered. That balance between a consequential choice and unresolved questions fits a series that treats exploration as both a mission and a way of confronting uncertainty.
