The date turns the familiar Star Wars line “May the Force be with you” into the pun “May the 4th be with you.” It began as a fan-led tradition and is now also marked with official videos, activities, merchandise, games and, in some years, special screen programming. The specific offers and events change from year to year.
Why is Star Wars Day on May 4?
The date is a play on the sound of “May the Force be with you”: “May the 4th be with you.” StarWars.com’s history of May the 4th says the idea did not begin as a Lucasfilm event. Fans developed it into an annual tradition, celebrating online and in person, and Lucasfilm later embraced it.
May also has a connection to the films’ release history. The same StarWars.com account notes that the six live-action films it discusses debuted in May, starting with the original Star Wars on May 25, 1977. That is historical context, not a claim that every Star Wars film has premiered in May.
What happens on Star Wars Day?
There is no single required way to celebrate. Fans may watch a film or series, play a Star Wars game, attend a local event, make a recipe or craft, or explore new merchandise. StarWars.com’s Star Wars Day hub brings together holiday videos, news and features, recipes, crafts, games and merchandise coverage.
