A July 31, 2025 report said its alpha was expected later that week; that was a historical launch window, not a current announcement. Reporting described a service for generating animated, television-style episodes from prompts and other inputs, but does not establish whether Showrunner is available now or what it costs.
What is Showrunner?
Showrunner was described in 2025 as a platform where users could make animated, TV-style episodes with AI. MobileSyrup reported that users could enter prompts of one to 100 words and have the system generate dialogue, characters, shot types, voiceover and animation. The Los Angeles Times later described users supplying prompts and images, using AI-generated voices and inserting themselves into stories. These are reported capabilities from 2025 coverage, not confirmation that every feature remains available.
Early examples named by MobileSyrup included Exit Valley, a Silicon Valley parody, and Everything is Fine, about a bickering couple transported to another world. The report also said Fable had used the system to create unauthorized South Park episodes. That history does not mean the episodes were officially licensed or that the named projects can still be watched or created on the platform.
Why “launches this week” is out of date
MobileSyrup’s July 31, 2025 story said an alpha was expected to launch later that week. The phrase “this week” referred to that specific 2025 reporting date. The sources available here do not establish whether Showrunner is currently accepting users, whether the alpha became generally available, or what its current access requirements are.

Who is behind it, and what does Amazon backing mean?
Showrunner is made by Fable Studio, a San Francisco-based company. MobileSyrup and the Los Angeles Times described Fable as backed by Amazon, but MobileSyrup reported that the amount of financial backing had not been disclosed. The reports do not establish that Amazon owns or operates Showrunner.
MobileSyrup reported Fable’s claim that its unauthorized South Park episodes had received more than 80 million views. That figure is a company claim reported by the outlet, not an independently verified count.

Can you use it now, and how much does it cost?
Current availability and pricing are not established by the cited coverage. The Los Angeles Times reported in August 2025 that the service was initially free and that Fable planned a monthly subscription for scene-generation credits. Those were plans reported at the time; they should not be treated as current terms or proof that a subscription launched.
What is the debate around AI-generated shows?
The word “slop” in the original headline is a pejorative, not a neutral description or a measured quality rating. In its 2025 review of examples, MobileSyrup criticized their animation, voice performances and timing as sterile or awkward. That is the outlet’s assessment of the examples it saw, not a controlled test or a verdict on all output from Showrunner.

The Los Angeles Times also reported broader concerns about whether AI tools can sustain coherent stories and develop characters over time, alongside arguments that such tools could broaden access to video creation. Those are industry perspectives, not Showrunner performance benchmarks. The Times quoted Freepik chief executive Joaquin Cuenca saying, “I don’t like this ‘slop’ term.” Ken Williams, chief executive of USC’s Entertainment Technology Center and a former studio executive, described a feared outcome as “the kind of wholesale dehumanization of the creative process that people, in their darkest moments, fear.” These statements express individual views, not settled findings.
Are established franchises coming to Showrunner?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Fable was talking with Disney and other content owners about bringing established franchises to the platform. The reporting does not establish that any licensing agreement was completed. The unauthorized South Park episodes and discussions with rights holders are distinct matters: one does not demonstrate permission for the other.

What Fable said about the platform’s prospects
MobileSyrup quoted Fable chief executive Edward Saatchi saying, “Maybe nobody wants this and it won’t work.” The remark captures uncertainty about whether people will want to create and watch AI-generated episodic entertainment; it is not a prediction that the service has closed or failed.
