Aquino made the characters—not a simple verdict about who is right—the center of a story intended to open discussion about African diaspora and identity in Dominican and Latinx communities.
What is Secadora about?
Cynthia is a photographer who falls for Laura, a model. Their connection is strained when Laura does not identify as Black, while Cynthia identifies with her Afro-Latina heritage. The official film description frames the short around sex and identity in Dominican culture; POPSUGAR describes its leads as uptown Afro-Dominican lesbians.
The conflict is personal, but Aquino has said it also reflects wider conversations about racial identity and belonging. She told POPSUGAR, “I want people to understand that both the characters are still good people. Neither is necessarily right or wrong, because it’s such a complicated thing.” The film asks viewers to sit with that complication rather than reduce either woman to a moral lesson.
Why did Elyssa Aquino make the film?
Aquino wanted Afro-Latina lesbians to be authentic leads and hoped the story would encourage more conversation and tolerance around identity. In her October 8, 2021 interview with POPSUGAR, she said she hoped the film would address “the lack of tolerance that exists right now when it comes to conversations about identity.”

She also described wanting to make audiences uncomfortable while bringing attention to a lack of knowledge in the community about the history of enslaved people in the Dominican Republic. That aim provides context for the film’s disagreement: it is meant to prompt engagement with difficult history, not to flatten the characters’ experiences into one easy answer.
What does Secadora mean, and why is hair important?
POPSUGAR reports that Aquino chose the title Secadora, translated in the article as “hooded hairdryer,” to evoke Eurocentric beauty standards, hair straightening and the denial of African heritage in Dominican culture. This is the director’s explanation of the title; it does not mean the film is set in a salon.

A scene in which Laura sets Cynthia’s hair in rollers foreshadows their different relationships to identity and assimilation. Hair is part of how the film gives a broader cultural tension an intimate, everyday form.
Who directed and stars in Secadora?
Elyssa Aquino directed the film. The Latino Film Institute describes her as a Dominican filmmaker born and raised in the Bronx, with an interest in Latina female-driven dramedy. Columbia Neighbors later described Aquino presenting the locally funded project at the Inwood Film Festival.
