No verified reporting establishes that Sean “Diddy” Combs and Sam Bankman-Fried shared one individual jail cell. September 2024 coverage said they were housed in the same unit at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, reportedly in a dormitory- or barracks-style area. That is different from being cellmates.
What did the September 2024 report say?
September 2024 coverage reported that Combs and Bankman-Fried were in the same housing unit at MDC Brooklyn. A syndicated report attributed a description of a barracks-style wing to NBC New York. The wording “same jail cell,” used in one headline, overstates what those accounts establish: they point to a shared unit, not a confirmed shared individual cell. Yahoo News’ syndicated report relayed the report and attribution; it does not provide independently verifiable cell assignments.
What is confirmed about their time at MDC Brooklyn?
The Associated Press reported on October 28, 2024, that both men were among the people housed at MDC Brooklyn during a federal interagency operation at the facility. The AP described MDC as primarily holding people awaiting federal court proceedings, as well as some people serving short sentences. Its report confirms their presence at the same facility at that time, but does not identify either man’s housing unit or cell. The AP account quoted the Bureau of Prisons saying the operation was “designed to achieve our shared goal of maintaining a safe environment for both our employees and the incarcerated individuals housed at MDC Brooklyn.” That statement addressed the agency’s safety goal, not the men’s assignments.
Where was Combs held later?
In July 2025, the AP reported that Combs remained at MDC Brooklyn while seeking bond before sentencing. The article quoted his lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, saying, “Sean Combs should not be in jail for this conduct.” That was advocacy in a bail request, not a factual finding. The July 2025 AP report did not establish a shared cell or unit with Bankman-Fried.

On October 31, 2025, the AP reported that Combs had been transferred from MDC Brooklyn to FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey. The September 2024 claim is therefore a report about a past placement, not evidence that Combs and Bankman-Fried are currently housed together. The AP report on the transfer identifies Fort Dix as Combs’s new facility.
Can public records confirm a cell assignment?
The Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Inmate Locator provides location information for federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present, but its public page does not show individual cell or housing-unit assignments. The BOP also cautions that release-date information may be out of date. The locator can help check an inmate’s reported whereabouts; it cannot verify whether two people shared a cell.
