Sasquatch Sunset is a 2024 live-action feature about a Sasquatch family trying to survive a changing world. It is not a Bigfoot documentary: the Associated Press describes it as a wordless, narrator-less experiment. The film’s strangeness is a matter of editorial taste, not an objective ranking.
What is Sasquatch Sunset about?
The film follows a Sasquatch family—possibly the last of its kind—over the course of a year in the forests of North America. The official film site calls the journey “absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant,” and markets it as “the greatest Bigfoot story ever told.” Those are the filmmakers’ promotional descriptions, not documentary claims about Bigfoot.

Is Sasquatch Sunset really a silent movie?
The Associated Press calls the film wordless and narrator-less. That is a useful description of its approach, but it does not establish that every sound is absent; the film is better described as a wordless experiment than simply a silent movie. The AP also characterizes it as an unusually strange creature comedy-drama, and reports an R rating for some sexual content, full nudity, and bloody images.
Who made the film, and who plays the Sasquatches?
- Directors: David Zellner and Nathan Zellner.
- Screenplay: David Zellner.
- Cast: Riley Keough, Jesse Eisenberg, Christophe Zajac-Denek, and Nathan Zellner.
How the filmmakers approached its tone
In a March 2024 Bleecker Street AMA post, David and Nathan Zellner said they wanted to ground the film’s extremes of comedy and drama in naturalism. They said they chose to shoot on location in Northern California’s Redwood Forests to help audiences connect emotionally with the Sasquatches. That is the directors’ stated intention, rather than an independent assessment of the finished film.

The film may suit viewers open to wordless storytelling, deliberately odd creature comedy, and bodily humor. Those looking for a conventional Bigfoot mystery or a documentary account should expect something quite different. The directors’ stated aim was emotional naturalism beneath the comedy and drama; whether that balance works is subjective. The AP reviewer praised the film’s audacity while also describing frustration with it, so its unusual approach is not a guarantee that it will appeal to every viewer.
