Spoilers for major events in Attack on Titan, including the final arc. Eren Yeager begins as a boy who dreams of freedom beyond the walls and vows to eradicate the Titans after his mother dies. His Titan powers are inherited; later, contact with Zeke, a Titan of royal blood, lets Eren activate the Founding Titan’s true power. He uses it to release the Wall Titans and begin the Rumbling, turning him against former allies.
What shapes Eren’s early history?
Eren’s early story is driven by two things: his longing to see the world beyond the walls and the trauma of the attack on Wall Maria. After witnessing his mother’s death, he vows to eradicate the Titans. That vow gives his anger a target, but it does not explain the whole person he becomes.
| In-world year | What happens |
|---|---|
| 845 | Wall Maria is attacked, and Eren’s mother dies. The official anime character profile records both events. |
| 847 | Eren enters the 104th Training Corps, according to the official character chronology. |
| 850 | He graduates fifth and experiences his first Titan transformation. The official profile dates these events to 850; the Season 2 story overview also connects his vow to his mother’s death and describes his use of Titan power in humanity’s struggle for freedom. |
These are fictional dates in the series chronology, not real-world dates. Eren’s initial goal is understandable in light of what he has experienced, but the story later complicates the idea that his pursuit of freedom is simply heroic.
How does Eren get his Titan powers?
Eren’s Titan abilities are inherited rather than gained through military training. Kodansha’s Volume 17 synopsis says he learns the truth about how he acquired his powers and about his father’s crimes. That establishes inheritance and a family history as central to his powers, but the publisher’s synopsis does not spell out every transfer detail.

The important distinction is that possessing Titan power and being able to use the Founding Titan’s full potential are not presented as the same thing. Eren’s access to that power has a specific condition.
How does Eren activate the Founding Titan?
In Kodansha’s Volume 30 synopsis, Eren must make contact with Zeke, a Titan of royal blood, “to activate the true power of the Founding Titan that courses through his veins.” The qualification matters: Eren does not simply have unrestricted use of the Founder’s true power from the outset. Contact with Zeke is the condition the synopsis identifies.

What does Eren do with the Founding Titan’s power?
Final-arc spoilers: Kodansha’s Colossal Edition Volume 7 synopsis says Eren uses the Founding Titan’s power to rouse the Wall Titans and break the Walls, beginning the Rumbling. The synopsis also describes Mikasa, Armin, surviving Survey Corps members, and former enemies banding together to stop him.
This is the decisive reversal in Eren’s arc: he once fought alongside the people who now oppose him. The events make him the initiator of a catastrophe and an antagonist to former allies. How to weigh his motives against the harm he causes is a matter of interpretation; the publisher synopsis establishes the actions and the coalition formed to stop him, not a single definitive moral judgment.

Why does Eren’s character arc matter?
Eren’s story begins with a desire for freedom and a vow made in the aftermath of personal loss. The later use of the Founding Titan turns that desire into a force that threatens others on a vast scale. His history therefore cannot be reduced either to the boy seeking revenge or to the power he eventually wields: the tension between his early aim and the consequences of his choices is central to how the series frames him.
