What Is RTMP? The History and Uses of the Streaming Protocol

RTMP carries live audio and video to platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. Here’s how the protocol works, why it outlasted Flash Player, and how it compares with RTMPS, HLS, and DASH.

RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) is an application-level protocol that carries and multiplexes audio, video, and interactive data between systems. Today, it is still used to send live video to platforms such as Twitch and YouTube. It is not a video encoder or codec: it transports media, while an encoder creates the stream and a codec defines how its audio or video is compressed.

What RTMP does—and what it does not

Adobe’s specification describes RTMP as a way to package multimedia into messages and send them over a suitable transport, commonly TCP. Those messages can include timing information and audio, video, or interactive content. The protocol handles delivery and organization; it does not determine the picture quality by itself.

  • Protocol: RTMP carries media messages between systems.
  • Encoder: Software or hardware captures or processes media and prepares it for streaming.
  • Codec: A format such as H.264 encodes the video or audio carried in the stream.
  • Streaming platform: A service such as YouTube or Twitch receives the stream and makes it available to viewers.

These parts work together, but they are not interchangeable. For example, YouTube’s current ingestion documentation lists RTMP and RTMPS with H.264 support; H.264 is the codec, while RTMP or RTMPS is the ingest protocol.

Why RTMP is associated with Flash

RTMP emerged in the Adobe Flash media ecosystem. An Adobe-authored informational RFC says Flash platform real-time communication for video, audio, and data typically used RTMP messages, originally designed for RTMP Chunk Stream over TCP. The RFC also notes that Adobe developed the protocols and profiles outside an IETF standards activity. The available documentation establishes this association, but not a precise invention date or a complete product-by-product history.

Flash Player ended; RTMP did not

Adobe ended Flash Player support beginning December 31, 2020, and blocked Flash content from running in the player beginning January 12, 2021. Adobe pointed to the maturity of open web technologies such as HTML5, WebGL, and WebAssembly and to browser vendors’ move away from plug-ins. Those events ended Flash Player’s role; they did not make RTMP unusable for live-stream ingest. Current Twitch and YouTube documentation still describes RTMP-based streaming.

What RTMP is used for today

RTMP remains a way for an encoder to send a live broadcast to a platform’s ingest servers. Twitch’s developer documentation describes software or hardware encoders and consoles sending captured video to Twitch using RTMP. It gives a broadcast URL pattern of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>; Twitch assigns the stream key as an authorization key. Treat a real stream key like a password: do not publish it, share screenshots containing it, or place it in public code.

YouTube Live’s developer documentation, last updated June 1, 2026, lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH as third-party ingestion options. The options and capabilities differ by platform, so check the destination’s current documentation before configuring an encoder.

RTMP vs. RTMPS, HLS, and DASH

For YouTube Live, the protocols differ in encryption, supported codecs, and latency characteristics. The table reflects YouTube’s comparison last updated June 1, 2026; it should not be treated as a universal specification for other platforms.

Protocol Encryption in YouTube’s comparison Codec and use notes Latency notes
RTMP Not encrypted H.264 Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
RTMPS Encrypted H.264; secure extension to RTMP Suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
HLS Encrypted H.264 and H.265/HEVC; YouTube notes 4K and HDR use. Not suitable for ultra-low latency; segment-based ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP.
DASH Encrypted H.264 and VP9; YouTube notes 4K use. Not suitable for ultra-low latency; segment-based ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP.

Why choose RTMPS?

RTMPS sends RTMP through an encrypted SSL connection. YouTube says encryption helps protect ingest traffic against interception or tampering in transit, including man-in-the-middle attacks. If the receiving platform supports RTMPS, it is generally the more secure choice for sending a stream across the internet.

When another ingest protocol may fit

YouTube documents HLS and DASH with codec options beyond the H.264 support listed for RTMP and RTMPS, including H.265/HEVC for HLS and VP9 for DASH. YouTube also notes 4K use with both and HDR use with HLS. These segment-based options are not suitable for ultra-low latency and typically have more latency than RTMP. Choose based on the platform’s accepted formats, required codec, security, and latency needs—not on the protocol name alone.

What you need to send an RTMP stream

RTMP is not a complete broadcasting setup by itself. A typical platform ingest workflow needs an encoder, a network connection, the destination’s ingest address, and a stream key or equivalent authorization credential. A hardware encoder is one possible tool, but it is not required: Twitch documents software encoders and consoles as alternatives. Make sure any device or software you use supports the workflow and settings required by your destination.

Keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud

RTMP explains how media can be sent to a platform; it does not require the sending computer to stay on if the stream is run by a cloud service. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service from StreamNeo that keeps a channel live around the clock from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to remain on. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Start a StreamNeo free day.

How to choose an ingest protocol

  • Start with the destination: Confirm which ingest protocols and codecs the platform currently accepts.
  • Consider security: Prefer encrypted ingest such as RTMPS when it is available and appropriate.
  • Match latency to the broadcast: For YouTube, RTMP and RTMPS are listed for normal, low, or ultra-low latency; HLS and DASH are not suitable for ultra-low latency.
  • Check the rest of the chain: Your encoder’s codec and output must match the receiving platform’s requirements. RTMP alone does not guarantee a particular resolution or quality.
  • Protect credentials: Keep stream keys private and replace a key if it has been exposed.

Common RTMP misunderstandings

  • “RTMP is a codec.” It is a protocol for carrying media messages; codecs such as H.264 encode media.
  • “Flash Player’s end means RTMP is obsolete.” Adobe ended Flash Player, but platforms continue to document RTMP and RTMPS ingest.
  • “RTMP guarantees low latency or high quality.” A platform may support particular latency modes, but quality also depends on the encoder, codec, settings, connection, and platform requirements.
  • “An RTMP address is enough to start broadcasting.” The encoder also needs the destination’s authorization details, usually a stream key, and must be configured for the platform.
