Prime Video is Amazon’s streaming service, but it is not just a single subscription catalog. The app combines movies and television included with Amazon Prime, rentals and purchases, live programming, sports, free ad-supported titles, and paid subscriptions to third-party services.
That distinction matters when you are looking for documentaries. A film may appear in Prime Video search without being included in your membership. Before pressing play, check whether the title is marked as included, requires a rental or purchase, or belongs to a separate channel subscription.
What is Prime Video?
Prime Video is Amazon’s video platform for streaming films, series, Amazon Originals, documentaries, live events, sports, and other programming. It is available through a web browser, mobile apps, smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, Fire TV devices, and other supported hardware.
In the United States, Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership. It can also be used for individual rentals and purchases, free ad-supported programming, and paid add-on subscriptions called Prime Video Channels.

The catalog is not identical everywhere. Availability depends on your country, the rights Amazon holds for a title, your device, and the type of subscription you have.

Prime Video Ultra replaced the former Prime Video Ad Free option in the United States on April 10, 2026. The old $8.99 standalone Prime Video plan should not be treated as a generally available current U.S. option; Amazon said in July 2025 that it was no longer available at that time.
Prices, taxes, promotions, eligibility requirements, and plan availability can vary by location and may change. Check the plans shown in your own Amazon or Prime Video account before subscribing.
Does Prime Video Ultra remove every advertisement?
No. Ultra removes ads from most Prime Video movies and television shows, but advertisements may remain in live television, sports, free ad-supported programming, and some add-on channels. It also does not turn every title in the app into included content.
What can you watch on Prime Video?
Prime Video brings several types of content into one interface:
- Included with Prime: Films, series, documentaries, and other titles available without a separate payment for Prime members. The included catalog changes over time.
- Rentals and purchases: Titles that require a one-time payment. These may be available to Prime members and non-members.
- Prime Video Channels: Paid subscriptions to outside services, billed separately.
- Free ad-supported content: Selected programming available without a paid Prime Video subscription, with advertising.
- Live programming and sports: Availability varies according to territory, broadcasting rights, device, and event.
Search results can therefore be misleading if you assume that every result is included. On homepage carousels, titles requiring an additional purchase may carry a yellow shopping-bag icon. On a title page, look for a price, a channel name, or another purchase or subscription indicator before starting playback.

Prime Video Channels explained
Prime Video Channels let you subscribe to selected third-party services from within Prime Video. The channel charge is added to the cost of Prime or Prime Video; it is not included automatically.
Eligible channels often offer a free trial, but the trial terms and monthly price depend on the provider. Channel catalogs, features, subtitles, downloads, and supported devices can also vary. A channel subscription does not necessarily give you access to the provider’s separate standalone app.

Add-on channels generally work only in the subscriber’s home country. The main Prime Video app may remain accessible while a channel’s programs become unavailable abroad.
How to cancel a Prime Video Channel
- Open Prime Video in a web browser.
- Go to Account & Settings.
- Select Subscriptions in the top menu.
- Find the relevant add-on subscription.
- Choose Unsubscribe or Cancel subscription, then confirm.
The confirmation screen shows the date on which access ends. Cancellation normally prevents another renewal rather than refunding a charge that has already been made. If Apple handles the billing, cancel through Apple, generally at least 24 hours before renewal.
Supported devices and picture quality
You can watch Prime Video on supported:
- Web browsers
- Android and iOS phones and tablets
- Fire tablets and Fire TV devices
- Windows 10/11 and macOS computers where apps are supported
- Smart TVs and streaming media players
- Game consoles and selected Blu-ray players
- Selected Android Automotive vehicles
- Meta Quest devices
Features are not uniform across these platforms. Supported resolution, live streaming, downloads, profiles, Dolby Atmos, ad-supported channels, and accessibility options depend on the device and title. For example, iOS devices are listed as supporting up to HD video, while selected Android and Fire TV devices can support Ultra HD.
For the best documentary viewing experience, check both the title’s available quality and your television or streaming device. A 4K display alone does not guarantee 4K playback: the title, plan, device, app, and connection must all support it.

Profiles, viewing limits, and parental controls
A Prime Video account can have up to six profiles: the default profile and up to five additional adult or Kids profiles. Each profile can maintain its own recommendations, watch progress, and watchlist.
To create or edit profiles on the website:
- Open the Prime Video home page.
- Place the cursor over the active profile icon.
- Select + New to create a profile, or choose Edit profiles to change or delete one.
The profile-management screen also includes options for profile or account PINs and profile locking. These controls are useful when children share an account or when you want to prevent accidental rentals and purchases.
Under the general usage rules, one Amazon account can usually stream up to three titles at once, with the same title generally limited to two devices simultaneously. Prime Video Ultra advertises up to five concurrent streams, but title-specific, provider-specific, regional, and device restrictions can still apply.
Downloading documentaries for offline viewing
Offline downloads require the Prime Video app on a compatible Fire tablet, iOS or Android device, Windows 10/11 computer, or Mac where downloads are supported. To download a film, open its details page and select Download. For a series, select the download icon beside an episode or use the option to download a season.

Not every title can be downloaded. Restrictions depend on the title, country, device, and subscription. Downloaded videos also cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay.
A downloaded title commonly gives you 30 days to begin watching and 48 hours to finish after playback starts, although the exact period can differ. This is particularly important for documentaries downloaded before travel: download access is not permanent ownership.

Renting or buying a title
If a documentary is not included with Prime, its details page may offer a rental or purchase option. The process is:
- Use Search or browse the Prime Video catalog.
- Open the documentary’s details page.
- Select Buy or Rent, if available.
- Enter the account PIN if purchase restrictions are enabled.
Purchased titles are normally available to stream or download, but licensing restrictions can sometimes affect future availability. Rented titles generally remain in your library for 30 days. Once playback begins, the viewing window is usually at least 48 hours.
Accessibility and audio features
Depending on the title and device, Prime Video may provide subtitles, closed captions, alternative audio tracks, audio description, Dolby Atmos, and surround sound. Not every documentary carries every accessibility track.
Some supported titles include Dialogue Boost. To turn it on during playback:
- Select the Subtitles or Closed Captions icon. On some platforms, audio is selected separately.
- Open the Audio options.
- Choose Dialogue Boost: Medium or Dialogue Boost: High.
Dialogue Boost is useful when interviews, narration, or quiet dialogue are difficult to hear against music and ambient sound, but its availability is title- and device-dependent.
