Predators is David Osit’s 2025 documentary about To Catch a Predator, the Dateline NBC series, and the format’s influence on later predator-catching operations. The 99% Rotten Tomatoes score and “taking over” claim in the original headline came from a December 10, 2025 BGR article; they are not a current score or a verified current Paramount+ ranking.
What is Predators about?
Directed by David Osit, Predators revisits To Catch a Predator, a recurring Dateline NBC feature that ran from 2004 to 2007. The series worked with local law enforcement: decoys posed as minors online, targets were lured to a house, and cameras and police waited there. The documentary considers how those confrontations became television entertainment and what followed as the format influenced later operations.
Rather than treating the subject as a simple true-crime story, the film examines the overlap among journalism, law enforcement, vigilantism and entertainment. It raises questions about how serious allegations and real people should be portrayed, where public-safety work ends and spectacle begins, and what happens when imitators adopt a television format. Those are questions the film explores, not settled conclusions about every operation or its consequences.
Why did the 99% Rotten Tomatoes headline change?
BGR reported a 99% Tomatometer score in its December 10, 2025 article. When checked on October 7, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 97% Tomatometer based on 79 critic reviews and a 40% Popcornmeter based on 100+ audience ratings. These are dated snapshots, and the figures can change as ratings are added or updated. The critic and audience meters represent different groups, so they should not be read as equivalent measures.

BGR also said the film had reached the top spot on Paramount+, but its article did not identify the chart or ranking method. That is a report of a ranking at that time, not evidence that Predators currently leads the service or a measure of its total viewership.
How does the documentary approach its subject?
In an interview with the International Documentary Association, Osit describes finding fan-collected raw footage as the material that made the subject more than a conventional true-crime story. The film moves from the original program to its influence and then to Chris Hansen’s present-day activities. Osit says he was interested in how viewers can respond differently to edited segments and to footage that is unaired or less edited.

“The raw footage gives us room to meditate on what we’re looking at, to contemplate it.”
Osit also frames the film’s form as a way to reconsider material once presented as entertainment: “I felt like I had a responsibility to use the form of my film to say there’s a different way to look at this material which was once turned into entertainment.” Both quotations are from the International Documentary Association interview, which was edited and condensed for clarity.
