NVIDIA NVENC is a dedicated video-encoding engine built into supported NVIDIA GPUs. In a compatible app such as OBS, it can encode a live video stream in hardware rather than relying entirely on CPU-based software encoding. That gives streamers another way to handle encoding while the computer is also running a game or composing a scene—but it does not guarantee a particular improvement in frame rate, image quality, or latency.
What NVENC is—and what it is not
NVENC is NVIDIA’s hardware video encoder, not a codec, streaming service, or separate graphics card. NVIDIA says its GPUs contain hardware-based encoders and decoders separate from CUDA cores, used for accelerated video encoding and decoding across supported codecs. NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK overview describes the architecture and supported formats.
When streaming software uses NVENC, the GPU’s encoder engine handles video compression. That is distinct from software encoding, where the CPU performs the encoding work. The game or scene may still use GPU resources, so NVENC does not mean the rest of the graphics card is idle.
How NVENC can help a live stream
Live video has to be encoded before it can be sent to a platform. If your computer is also rendering a game, capturing a screen, or composing a scene, using a dedicated encoder can move the encoding task away from CPU software encoding. NVIDIA presents NVENC for workflows including game broadcasting, and its software integrations include OBS and XSplit (NVIDIA Video Processing).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The practical benefit depends on your specific hardware, workload, encoder settings, and streaming platform. The official material cited here does not establish a universal amount of CPU saved or a guaranteed improvement to game frame rate, stream quality, or latency. Treat NVENC as an available encoding path to configure and test, not as a promise of a fixed performance gain.
Which codecs NVENC supports
NVIDIA lists H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1 among the formats supported for encoding. Which formats and features are available depends on the exact GPU generation and model; do not assume every NVIDIA GPU supports all three. Check your GPU’s model and NVIDIA’s support information before choosing a codec or buying hardware.

Codec support alone does not determine whether a stream will work. Your streaming platform must accept the selected codec and the settings you use. Check the platform’s current requirements and the encoder choices exposed by your current streaming software.
Choosing NVENC in OBS
NVIDIA’s OBS broadcasting guide explains how to select a hardware NVENC encoder and gives platform-oriented examples. The guide identifies its recommendations as applying to OBS Studio 29.1 and up, so use them as version-specific guidance rather than permanent platform rules.

- Check what your GPU supports. Identify your NVIDIA GPU model and the NVENC codec options available for it. Do not select AV1 or HEVC on the assumption that every GPU can encode it.
- Open OBS’s output settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Output and choose the output mode and streaming encoder controls available in your installed version. Select a hardware NVENC option if it is available and appropriate for your target platform.
- Choose a platform-compatible codec and settings. NVIDIA’s guide names H.264 NVENC for Twitch. For YouTube, in the guide’s stated context, it recommends AV1 on an RTX 40 Series GPU or HEVC otherwise. Verify current YouTube or Twitch requirements and any service-imposed setting limits before going live; platform rules and software options can change.
- Test the actual stream. Confirm OBS is using the intended encoder and that the platform accepts the stream. If a codec or setting is unavailable or rejected, choose an option supported by both your GPU and the platform.
For developer workflows, NVIDIA also documents GPU-accelerated video encoding and decoding through FFmpeg. That is a separate route from selecting an encoder in OBS, and available features depend on the hardware. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide.
NVENC versus CPU software encoding: how to decide
The useful comparison is not a universal quality or speed ranking; it is whether each option fits your machine and broadcast requirements.

| Decision point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Codec support | Whether your exact GPU can encode H.264, HEVC, or AV1, and whether the target platform accepts that codec. |
| Platform compatibility | The platform’s current requirements and limits, alongside the options available in your streaming software. |
| System workload | Whether dedicated encoding suits a computer that is also rendering a game or composing a scene, and whether the GPU has enough resources for all those tasks. |
| Quality and latency | These depend on settings and workload. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled comparison sufficient to make numeric claims against CPU software encoding. |
If your installed GPU already supports the codec and workflow you need, there may be no reason to buy another one. Check the hardware you own first; consider an upgrade only if it addresses a specific compatibility or workflow need.

NVENC helps a compatible computer encode video. It does not, by itself, keep a stream running after the computer or connection goes offline. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or gameplay setup, a cloud service is a different kind of solution: StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud, so a home computer does not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only.
