Narsil was the sword Elendil carried in the Last Alliance’s war against Sauron. It broke when Elendil fell, and his son Isildur used a shard to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. The surviving pieces were kept as an heirloom and later reforged for Aragorn under a new name: Andúril, the Flame of the West.
What is Narsil?
Narsil is the name of Elendil’s sword before it was broken. Its story is closely tied to the fall of Sauron at the end of the Second Age and, much later, to Aragorn’s inheritance of the broken blade. The shards endured after Elendil’s death, and the reforged sword became Andúril.
The account of the sword’s history and custody is summarized in Tolkien Gateway’s Narsil reference, a secondary source. Tolkien’s novel is the authority for the events and wording in the story.
How was Narsil broken, and what did Isildur do with a shard?
Elendil carried Narsil in the Last Alliance’s war against Sauron. When Elendil fell, the sword broke. Isildur then used one of its shards to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand. The distinction matters: Isildur did not wield the intact Narsil at that moment; he used a fragment of the broken sword.

How did the shards reach Aragorn?
After Isildur was killed, his esquire Ohtar rescued the shards and took them to Rivendell. They were preserved there and later passed through the line of Arnor’s kings and the Northern Dúnedain. Elrond gave the shards to Aragorn when he was twenty.
When did Narsil become Andúril?
In Third Age 3018, the shards were reforged in Rivendell for Aragorn. The restored sword was named Andúril, “Flame of the West.” Narsil and Andúril are therefore successive names for one sword: Narsil is the original blade, while Andúril is its reforged form.

Who made Narsil?
The sword is attributed to Telchar, a Dwarf-smith, and its making is placed in the First Age. That early attribution is not accompanied by a detailed account of the sword’s provenance. Little is established about its history between its making and its appearance with Elendil, so a fuller chain of earlier owners should not be assumed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does the broken sword matter to Aragorn’s story?
The inheritance and reforging connect Aragorn to the northern kings whose line preserved the shards. As an interpretation of those events, the broken sword can be read as a link between an older kingship and Aragorn’s later claim. The narrative facts are the preservation of the fragments, their passage through the northern line, and their restoration for him as Andúril.
