Locktober most commonly refers to an informal October chastity challenge associated with online kink communities. Some participants use a chastity device; others make a personal commitment without one. The term also appears in social-media posts about “locking in” on fitness or self-improvement, so the surrounding context matters.
What does Locktober mean?
In its established kink-community use, Locktober blends “lock” and “October” to describe a month-themed chastity challenge. Participants may choose to abstain from sexual activity or orgasm for some or all of the month, sometimes with a partner’s involvement. Practices vary: there is no universal set of dates, rules, or requirements.
A chastity device, sometimes called a chastity cage, is optional. The challenge can be a personal commitment without hardware, and the word alone does not tell you what an individual participant is doing. Locktober.com’s guide puts the lack of formal governance plainly: “There is no governing body behind Locktober.” That describes the informal nature of the event, not an independent authority or official rulebook.
Why does Locktober appear in fitness or self-improvement posts?
Some social-media users have repurposed the word as a “lock in” riff: a prompt to focus on goals, routines, fitness, or self-improvement during October. In that context, “lock” means concentrating or committing—not wearing a chastity device. Know Your Meme’s account discusses this alternate TikTok usage alongside the kink-community challenge.

If a post mentions workouts, habits, or personal goals, it may be using the self-improvement meaning. If it mentions chastity or kink, it is likely using the established challenge meaning. When the context is unclear, ask what the poster means rather than assuming.
Where did the term come from?
The word is generally explained as a blend of “lock” and “October.” Wiktionary’s entry gives that definition and cites an October 2018 Independent essay as an example of the word in use. Know Your Meme describes the challenge as popularized in BDSM communities in the late 2010s.

Those references help place the term in circulation, but they do not establish a definitive first use, a founder, or a single event that began the challenge. The most accurate description is that it emerged through online chastity and kink communities, with its exact origin unverified.
Does Locktober require a chastity device?
No. Some descriptions focus on a physical device, but a device is not a requirement of the informal challenge. A participant may instead make a private commitment or agree on boundaries with a partner. There is no standard version that everyone follows.

Using a device is not a recommendation or an endurance test. Locktober-focused safety guidance warns about poor fit and concerning symptoms, but it is not an independent clinical safety standard.
