H-Pop is Kunal Purohit’s book H-Pop: The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars, which historian Ramachandra Guha reviewed as an investigation of how popular culture is used to advance Hindutva narratives. Guha says the book’s strongest sections examine musicians, lyrics and songs that dehumanize Muslims. He also describes its coverage of Hindutva-inflected poetry and books. What does Guha mean by “paranoid triumphalism”?
Guha uses “paranoid triumphalism” to describe a combination of menace and promised victory: songs depict Hindus as threatened by dangerous enemies while assuring listeners that their side will prevail. In Guha’s words, “They thus illuminate what I have elsewhere termed the ‘paranoid triumphalism’ which defines Hindutva ideology today.” [Scroll.in, 3 December 2023]
Guha also quotes Purohit’s formulation that “for Hindutva to survive and flourish, it needs enemies – constantly producing fresh ones as time passes”. These are interpretations of the ideology and cultural material discussed in the review, not measurements of how all listeners understand it or what effects it has. [Scroll.in, 3 December 2023]
What does the book examine?
Guha describes Purohit’s book as an account of how songs are composed, visualized, recorded and circulated, including through YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp. It sets this material alongside propaganda songs and poems from other political and extremist settings. [Scroll.in, 3 December 2023]

In a later interview, Purohit said his investigation began after he encountered songs used to fuel a Hindutva narrative in Gumla, Jharkhand. He described examining music played at religious processions and its relationship to communal tension. The Mooknayak identifies HarperCollins as the publisher and says the book considers the figures, audiences and financial backers involved, as well as the phenomenon’s relationship to BJP popularity. Those are the author’s account of his reporting and the interview’s description of the book. [The Mooknayak, 17 February 2024]
What examples does Guha discuss?
Guha cites a Haryanvi song ordering Muslims to chant “Vande Mataram” or leave, and songs that portray Muslims as demographic threats. He also discusses poems: one about a purported warrior, Jograj Singh Gurjar, whose historical claim Guha calls fabricated, and another that attacks Gandhi while glorifying Nathuram Godse. These examples and characterizations are Guha’s account in his review. [Scroll.in, 3 December 2023]

Guha notes that actor Kangana Ranaut shared the Jograj Singh poem online before the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly election. He also says songs and poems often praise Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath. His suggestion that this material may find greater receptivity in northern states such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana is not accompanied by a measured regional comparison. [Scroll.in, 3 December 2023]
How do the songs reach audiences, and what do the figures show?
Guha describes circulation through both online platforms and public settings; Purohit’s interview also discusses songs played at religious processions. Purohit told The Mooknayak that some creators are ideologically motivated, while others see an opportunity for viral popularity and business. As he put it: “There are creators who are ideologically driven to do it. But there are also people who do it because they believe it is a great business at this point.” This is his explanation, not an audited account of creators’ motives or earnings. The Mooknayak reported 75 million YouTube views for Laxmi Dubey’s “Har Ghar Bhagwa Chhayega Part 2” in its 2024 article. That is a dated figure reported by the publication, not a current or independently verified platform count. Neither article establishes a verified statistic for H-Pop’s overall prevalence or a quantified causal effect of a particular song on communal violence. [The Mooknayak, 17 February 2024]

No. Guha writes that no major BJP leader had explicitly endorsed the specific propaganda poems, songs and pamphlets he discusses, and describes their mobilization as being carried out by non-state actors. That qualification does not establish a direct party command structure; it also does not answer broader questions about political influence beyond the specific materials in the review.
