When historian Ramachandra Guha visited Gandhi’s Phoenix Farm in 2009, he found a small, well-kept museum on a much-reduced remnant of the original settlement. The place moved visitors not because it had been restored to its former scale, but because its surviving buildings and exhibits made a difficult history tangible: an experiment in shared work and religious fellowship, a family’s decades of stewardship, and a community displaced by violence.

A settlement reduced to a small remnant

In a 2024 account marking Phoenix’s 120th anniversary, Guha recalled visiting the settlement with Ela Gandhi in 2009. He described a three-acre property remaining from the original 100 acres, with a modest, well-kept museum. Those figures record Guha’s observation on that visit; they are not a current land survey.

The museum gave the place an immediacy that a summary of Gandhi’s ideas could not. Phoenix was not simply a historic address: it was a working community whose newspaper, daily routines and interfaith life were shaped by people who stayed after Gandhi left South Africa.

Why Gandhi established Phoenix in 1904

A practical response to Ruskin

In November 1904, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi bought a farm about 14 miles (22.5 km) from Durban and named it Phoenix Farm after a nearby railway station. Guha traces the decision partly to John Ruskin’s Unto This Last, a book Gandhi received from Henry Polak. Gandhi wanted a life in which he worked with his hands as well as thought, wrote and spoke for clients.

Phoenix put that aspiration into practice. It brought physical work and intellectual labor into the same community, rather than treating the farm as a retreat from public life.

A home for Indian Opinion

The settlement also became home to Indian Opinion, a multilingual newspaper. Its presence linked the farm’s daily life to political communication and public debate. Phoenix was therefore both a place to live and work and a base for reaching readers beyond the settlement.

How the settlement continued after Gandhi left

West and Manilal take up the work

Gandhi left South Africa in 1914. Albert West, an English dissenter who had helped run Indian Opinion and Phoenix, struggled to sustain the settlement. In 1917 Gandhi sent his son Manilal back to help revive it.

Manilal and Sushila Gandhi later maintained the farm and the newspaper. Their work matters to Phoenix’s history: the settlement was not kept alive by Gandhi’s presence, but by people who took responsibility for its daily and institutional life.

A paper’s final issue

Maintaining Indian Opinion proved difficult, and the paper closed in August 1961. Its end marked the close of a central part of Phoenix’s public mission, even as the settlement’s history continued through the people and structures that remained.

Interfaith practice as part of daily life

West described the community’s prayers as an effort to bring faiths together without placing one above another: “Hindus, Muslims, Parsees, and Christians sang hymns and read the various scriptures in different languages. This, to my mind, was a unique example of a universal church service, where no particular religion was placed in a superior position and where Truth and Love were acknowledged to be the universal attributes of God.”

The account helps explain why visitors may find Phoenix moving beyond its association with one famous resident. Its history includes an attempt to make religious pluralism part of shared daily practice, alongside work and public communication.

Violence, flight and abandonment in 1985

Guha recounts that violence in the area in 1985 prompted residents to flee and Phoenix was abandoned. This break in the settlement’s story is not a simple tale of buildings gradually falling into disuse: the community’s departure followed upheaval and danger. The available account does not establish further details about the violence, so it should not be reduced to a more specific explanation than the source provides.

What visitors can see at the site

The Phoenix Settlement Trust describes a museum with displays on democracy, regional struggle, Kasturba Gandhi and women’s struggle. It also identifies historic buildings at the site. Together, these exhibits and structures connect Phoenix’s experiment in communal life to broader local and political histories without making the settlement a stand-in for Gandhi’s entire legacy.

Guha’s 2009 visit offers a particularly evocative account of the museum, while the Trust’s description identifies what the organization says the site presents. Neither should be mistaken for a guarantee that every building or display is currently accessible.

For a fuller history grounded in letters, Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie’s Gandhi’s African Legacy: Phoenix Settlement 1904 to 2024: A History Through Letters was published by UWC Press in 2024 (ISBN 9781990995095). A museum visit offers a view of the place; the book offers a longer documentary record of its history.
