What kind of character is Grimace?
McDonald’s identifies Grimace as a McDonaldland character. The company’s description presents him as a lovable, fuzzy purple friend who enjoys shakes, but it does not assign him a definitive species. In its 2023 birthday campaign, McDonald’s left the question open: “Perhaps we’ll never know…”
That means “taste bud,” “blob,” and similar explanations should be treated as guesses, not official facts. McDonald’s has not established a specific reason for his purple color either.
What is known about Grimace’s family?
In McDonald’s 2023 birthday campaign lore, Grimace came from Grimace Island and had a large family. The campaign named Grandma Winky, aunts Millie and Tillie, and Uncle O’Grimacey. These details belong to the company’s promotional storytelling; they do not resolve what kind of creature Grimace is.

McDonald’s retrospective on its toys documents a change in Grimace’s arms while showing purple as a continuing feature:

Why did Grimace become widely talked about again?
McDonald’s brought Grimace to the center of a U.S. birthday promotion announced June 6, 2023. The company said participating U.S. restaurants would begin offering a limited-time purple shake and meal on June 12, while supplies lasted. The campaign also included apparel and a free game. Those dates describe a past promotion, not current menu availability.
McDonald’s reported that the Grimace’s Birthday campaign received three billion TikTok views. That is the company’s reported campaign result, not a figure described in its release as independently audited. In the June 2023 announcement, then McDonald’s USA Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer Tariq Hassan called Grimace “the perfect lovable icon to have McDonald’s meet our fans at the intersection of nostalgia and culture.”

Have there been Grimace toys or collectibles?
Yes. McDonald’s documented Grimace as one of twelve characters in a 2023 Squishmallows Happy Meal collection. Its announcement said the collection was planned for participating U.S. restaurants beginning December 26, for a limited time while supplies lasted. The 2023 birthday announcement also promoted Grimace-inspired apparel. These campaigns establish that official promotional items existed; they do not establish present-day stock or authorized retail availability.
Are Grimace promotions the same in every country?
No. Promotions are market-specific and time-limited. For example, McDonald’s Germany announced a separate Grimace campaign dated April 29, 2026, with menu items planned for approximately three weeks and a purple Grimace glass planned from May 11. That German promotion is distinct from the U.S. 2023 birthday campaign and is past as of October 2026.
