Freeview Play is the UK’s hybrid television platform. It combines live Freeview channels received through an aerial with internet-delivered catch-up, on-demand programmes, search, recommendations and streaming channels in one TV interface. It is free of a monthly Freeview subscription, but it is not the same as Netflix or Prime Video and may still require compatible hardware, broadband, aerial reception and a TV Licence for relevant viewing.

Freeview Play is the UK’s hybrid television platform. It combines live Freeview channels received through an aerial with internet-delivered catch-up, on-demand programmes, search, recommendations and streaming channels in one TV interface. On compatible devices, it can bring together services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5 and UKTV Play alongside live television.

It is free to use in the sense that Freeview does not charge a monthly subscription for its free-to-air content. You may still need compatible hardware, broadband, a suitable aerial and, for relevant viewing, a UK TV Licence. Freeview Play is also not a replacement name for Netflix, Prime Video or NOW: those are separate services with their own subscriptions and requirements.

Freeview, Freeview Play and paid streaming: what is the difference?

Service What it provides What you normally need
Freeview Free-to-air live television, primarily delivered through a terrestrial aerial A compatible TV or receiver and suitable aerial reception
Freeview Play Freeview live channels plus connected TV features, broadcaster players, catch-up, on-demand content and streaming channels A certified Freeview Play TV, recorder or set-top box, internet access and, for live terrestrial channels, suitable aerial reception
Paid streaming services Subscription catalogues such as Netflix, Prime Video or NOW A compatible device and a separate subscription where required

Everyone TV describes Freeview Play as a hybrid broadcast and on-demand service. It is built into most connected TVs sold in the UK, while Ofcom lists it as a regulated electronic programme guide operated by Everyone TV. See the official Freeview explanation of Freeview Play and Ofcom’s reporting on the platform for current service information.

How Freeview Play works

Freeview Play uses two different connections, and understanding that distinction prevents a common setup mistake:

  • The aerial supplies broadcast Freeview channels. The number and quality of channels depend on your location, transmitter coverage, aerial condition and device capability.
  • The internet connection supplies catch-up, on-demand playback, connected programme-guide features and internet-delivered channels.

A fast broadband connection does not automatically replace an aerial if you want the full terrestrial live-TV service. Conversely, an aerial alone does not provide the connected Freeview Play features.

A typical setup works like this:

  1. Use a compatible Freeview Play TV, recorder or set-top box.
  2. Connect the aerial if you want live terrestrial channels.
  3. Connect the TV or receiver to the internet, usually through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  4. Complete the initial channel setup and sign in to any individual broadcaster players that request an account.
  5. Open the TV Guide, press the Freeview Play button if your remote has one, or go to Channel 100.
  6. Select a live programme, an earlier programme available for catch-up or one of the on-demand players.

Freeview identifies 2 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for catch-up and on-demand services. Streaming also uses data, which may matter if your broadband package has a usage allowance. The minimum figure is not a promise of perfect HD playback: actual performance can be affected by Wi-Fi coverage, household traffic, service congestion and the quality of the individual stream.

What can you watch on Freeview Play?

The platform brings together major UK broadcaster players, including:

  • BBC iPlayer
  • ITVX
  • Channel 4
  • 5
  • UKTV Play

Depending on the device and location, Freeview’s connected environment may also include services or content areas such as STV, Legend, CBS Catchup and BBC Sounds. The lineup is not identical on every television or set-top box. Players can vary by product, software version, region and broadcaster arrangements, and some services may require their own sign-in.

For the current combination of live and on-demand services, check Freeview’s live and on-demand channels information rather than relying on an old channel list.

Channel 100: the main Freeview Play gateway

On an internet-connected Freeview Play device, Channel 100 is the main entry point to the platform’s on-demand environment. It can provide featured programmes, on-demand players, search, recommendations and help information. The precise layout can differ between manufacturers, but Channel 100 is a useful first place to look when you cannot find the connected Freeview Play interface.

Catch-up from the TV Guide

Freeview Play’s most useful feature is the ability to move backwards through the electronic programme guide. When an earlier programme is available from a broadcaster’s catch-up service, selecting it can launch the relevant player. Remote-control buttons and guide designs vary, but the backward-scrolling concept is supported across Freeview Play devices.

This does not mean every programme remains available indefinitely. Catch-up windows are controlled by the broadcaster, and programmes can disappear, move between services or have regional restrictions.

How many channels does Freeview Play have?

Freeview describes its service as offering more than 100 standard channels, plus a selection of HD channels and streaming channels. There is no single guaranteed channel total that applies to every UK household.

Your actual selection can depend on:

  • your postcode and local transmitter coverage;
  • the condition, alignment and type of aerial;
  • the TV or receiver’s tuner and software;
  • whether the device supports particular connected players or streaming channels;
  • regional services and broadcaster availability.

Channel numbers and availability can change, especially for internet-delivered channels. Use Freeview’s postcode and channel-checking tools for your address instead of treating a national channel count as a guarantee.

Is Freeview Play really free?

There is no monthly Freeview Play subscription and no contract for its free-to-air service. However, the complete setup can involve costs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hardware: you may need to buy a compatible television, recorder or set-top box.
  • Broadband: catch-up and on-demand viewing uses your internet connection and may count towards a data allowance.
  • Aerial work: an installation, repair, replacement or reception investigation may be necessary for reliable terrestrial channels.
  • TV Licence: licensing rules apply independently of Freeview’s subscription price.
  • Optional subscriptions: Netflix, Prime Video, NOW and similar services cost extra and are not included with Freeview Play.

The most accurate description is therefore “free TV service with possible equipment and household-connectivity costs”, not “everything is free”.

Do you need a TV Licence?

Freeview Play being free of subscription charges does not remove UK TV-licensing obligations. TV Licensing says you need a licence to watch live television on any channel or streaming service and to use BBC iPlayer on any device. That can apply when you use the relevant parts of Freeview Play.

The rules are more specific for on-demand programmes on services other than BBC iPlayer, so do not assume that every type of catch-up viewing has exactly the same requirement. Check the current TV Licensing guidance on BBC iPlayer and its information about watching live television online and on mobile devices for your exact viewing pattern.

Do you need a Freeview account?

Normal broadcast Freeview viewing does not generally require a Freeview account. Catch-up and on-demand viewing is different: the individual broadcaster may ask you to register or sign in. This can apply to BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5, UKTV Play and, where applicable, CBS services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Freeview often acts as the guide and launch point, while the broadcaster’s own player remains responsible for playback, account management, parental controls and the programmes it makes available. An account may therefore be requested even though Freeview itself does not charge a subscription.

Can you add Freeview Play to an existing TV?

Only if the television already supports Freeview Play or you connect a receiver that does. A TV described merely as “smart” may have apps and internet access but still lack the Freeview Play guide and integration. Similarly, a television with a standard Freeview tuner is not automatically a Freeview Play television.

For an older or incompatible set, look specifically for a Freeview Play set-top box or Freeview Play recorder. A recorder can add the platform’s connected features while also providing recording functions, depending on the model. If you are replacing the TV, search for an explicitly labelled Freeview Play TV.

Do not treat “smart TV”, “DVB-T2”, “internet TV” or “has streaming apps” as sufficient proof of compatibility. Before buying, verify that the exact UK model or listing explicitly supports Freeview Play and check which players it currently provides.

Freeview lists retailers including Amazon, Currys, John Lewis, Richer Sounds and Argos among places selling Freeview devices. Retail inventory, software support and player availability can change, so confirm the individual product details before purchase. A practical place to compare Freeview Play set-top boxes and compatible receivers is Amazon, but the product must state explicit UK Freeview Play support; a generic streaming stick is not automatically suitable.

Freeview Play compared with Netflix and Prime Video

Freeview Play is not one large paid catalogue competing directly with Netflix or Prime Video. It is a UK television platform that combines broadcast channels with participating broadcaster players, catch-up and free streaming channels.

A Freeview Play TV may also include apps for Netflix, Prime Video, NOW or other services. Those apps are optional third-party features. Their subscriptions, content libraries, device compatibility and terms are separate from Freeview Play. Buying a Freeview Play television does not give you a Netflix or Prime Video subscription.

Can you use Freeview Play on a phone or computer?

Freeview also provides mobile and web-based programme discovery. Its mobile app offers a TV Guide, programme information, reminders, favourites and links into broadcaster players. The exact mobile experience depends partly on whether the relevant broadcaster apps are installed and supported on the phone or tablet.

This can be useful if you want to browse programmes without sitting in front of the television, but it is not necessarily a complete replacement for the TV platform. In particular, the mobile and web services do not recreate the aerial-based live-channel reception provided by a Freeview Play television or receiver.

See Freeview’s mobile app information for the current feature set and links to broadcaster services.

Accessibility features

Freeview Play devices include an accessible TV Guide available through Channel 555. Ofcom reports that text-to-speech support has expanded across connected devices, but implementation depends on the device generation. Older hardware may not receive every newer accessibility feature through software updates.

If spoken programme-guide navigation or another accessibility feature is important, check the exact television or set-top-box model’s accessibility specifications. The Freeview Play logo alone is not enough to establish that every feature is available. Ofcom’s electronic programme-guide accessibility reporting provides the relevant current context.

Which Freeview Play device should you buy?

  • Choose a Freeview Play TV if you are replacing the television and want the service built in.
  • Choose a Freeview Play set-top box if your existing TV works well but lacks Freeview Play.
  • Choose a Freeview Play recorder if you want the platform plus recording functionality, subject to the model’s features.
  • Investigate the aerial first if your main problem is missing or unstable live channels. Broadband alone will not fix poor terrestrial reception.

Before ordering, check five things: explicit UK Freeview Play compatibility, aerial and tuner requirements, internet connectivity, the players supported by that exact model, and accessibility features if relevant. Also check whether the device is new enough to receive current software and player updates.

Freeview Play troubleshooting checklist

Live channels are missing

Check the aerial lead, retune the device and use the postcode checker to confirm local coverage. If only some multiplexes or regional services are absent, the issue may be aerial condition, transmitter coverage or local reception rather than broadband.

Catch-up or Channel 100 will not load

Confirm that the TV or receiver is connected to the internet, test the connection in its network settings and restart the device and router. Remember that a device can receive live aerial channels while being offline, so live TV working does not prove that Freeview Play’s connected functions are online.

A programme asks for a login

That is normally controlled by the broadcaster’s player. Follow the on-screen registration or sign-in process and check the broadcaster’s own availability and parental-control rules.

Your “smart” TV has Netflix but no Freeview Play

Streaming-app support is not the same as Freeview Play support. Check the exact model specification. If it is incompatible, add a Freeview Play set-top box or recorder rather than assuming another generic streaming device will provide the platform.

Bottom line

Freeview Play is the UK’s free hybrid TV platform: live Freeview channels through an aerial, combined with internet-connected catch-up, broadcaster players, on-demand programming, search and recommendations. To use the television version properly, you generally need a certified Freeview Play TV, recorder or set-top box, internet access for connected features and suitable aerial reception for broadcast channels. Its strongest advantage is bringing familiar UK live and catch-up television into one guide without a Freeview monthly subscription; its main limitations are device compatibility, regional channel variation, broadband dependence for on-demand viewing and separate broadcaster-account or licensing requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Freeview Play completely free?

No. Freeview Play does not charge a monthly subscription for its free-to-air content. You may still pay for compatible hardware, broadband, aerial work and any optional third-party streaming subscriptions. UK TV-licensing rules can also apply.

Does every smart TV have Freeview Play?

Not necessarily. A smart TV may have streaming apps without supporting the Freeview Play guide and players. Check the exact model for explicit UK Freeview Play compatibility, or add a Freeview Play set-top box or recorder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Freeview Play need an aerial and broadband?

The aerial provides live terrestrial Freeview channels, while the internet provides catch-up, on-demand playback and connected features. You generally need both for the full Freeview Play experience.

Can I watch Freeview Play on my phone?

You can browse programme information and use Freeview’s mobile and web discovery tools without owning a Freeview Play television. However, that does not reproduce the aerial-based live-TV experience, and playback may depend on individual broadcaster apps.

The Bottom Line

Freeview Play is free hybrid UK television, not a Netflix-style subscription. It combines aerial-delivered live Freeview with internet catch-up and on-demand services. Check for explicit Freeview Play support when buying a TV or receiver, and remember that aerial reception, broadband, broadcaster accounts and TV-licensing rules are separate parts of the setup.
