Down Cemetery Road is an eight-episode Apple TV thriller set in an Oxford suburb. After a house explodes and a girl goes missing, neighbor Sarah Trafford turns to private investigator Zoë Boehm to find her. Their search leads to a conspiracy involving people believed to be dead.
What happens in Down Cemetery Road?
The story begins in a quiet Oxford suburb, where an explosion destroys a house. In the aftermath, a young girl disappears. Sarah Trafford, who lives nearby, becomes determined to find out what happened and hires private investigator Zoë Boehm. What starts as a search for the missing girl opens onto a wider mystery involving people long believed dead.
That premise is the spoiler-light version: Apple’s official synopsis establishes the disappearance and conspiracy, but not how the mystery is resolved.
Who are Sarah Trafford and Zoë Boehm?
- Sarah Trafford, played by Ruth Wilson, is the neighbor who pursues the missing-girl question.
- Zoë Boehm, played by Emma Thompson, is the private investigator Sarah hires.
The series is written by Morwenna Banks, who is also an executive producer. Natalie Bailey is the lead director, and 60Forty Films produced the show. Mick Herron is among its executive producers. Apple TV Press lists the series’ cast and credits.

Is Down Cemetery Road based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts Mick Herron’s novel Down Cemetery Road, which Hachette identifies as the first book in the Zoë Boehm series. The novel and the television adaptation share the starting premise of a house explosion in Oxford and a missing girl. The book’s story broadens beyond Oxford into a conspiracy involving government forces, mercenaries and loners.

The adaptation’s episode count and the novel’s form are different, but the available official descriptions do not establish specific scene-by-scene changes. Hachette UK’s catalogue describes the novel and its place in the series.
Is it connected to Slow Horses?
It is another screen adaptation of Mick Herron’s writing, but Down Cemetery Road is not described as a direct spin-off of Slow Horses. Apple presents the two as separate adaptations. The book connection here is the Zoë Boehm series, which begins with Herron’s Down Cemetery Road.
