Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band is a documentary about how Springsteen and the band prepared for and performed their 2023–2024 tour—and how Springsteen shaped those shows into a story. Rehearsals, backstage scenes, concert footage, archival clips, narration and band reflections make it more than a conventional concert film.
What is the Road Diary Bruce Springsteen movie about?
The film follows Springsteen and the E Street Band from early rehearsals in Red Bank, New Jersey, through performances on their 2023–2024 world tour. It shows the work around the shows as well as the performances themselves: rehearsals, backstage preparation, and the musicians’ reflections on the band and its history. Hulu’s official synopsis describes rare archival footage and personal reflections from Springsteen as part of that account.
A central thread is Springsteen’s setlist. The songs place newer material beside familiar older work, giving the performances a shape that connects the present tour to the band’s past and to themes including life, loss, mortality and community. In his interview with The Walt Disney Company, director Thom Zimny said, “He was telling a story with this set list, and it’s a story that we’ve all been part of.”
How does the documentary tell the story?
Zimny described the film as moving between styles rather than fitting one genre: “There’s no genre that I can lock it into, because it goes from cinéma vérité to rock concert footage to spoken word.” The result combines observational moments around the band with professionally filmed performances and Springsteen’s reflective narration.

Zimny also said he wanted to bring E Street history into view while showing “Bruce the artist right now.” Springsteen’s voiceover supplies a personal perspective, while archival material and the musicians’ reflections connect the tour to the band’s longer history. The documentary therefore moves between the immediate experience of touring and the memories and ideas that inform it.
What tour figures does the film’s announcement give?
Springsteen’s May 14, 2024 announcement offers two figures, each tied to a specific part of the tour rather than the full 2023–2024 run:

Road Diary centers on a touring band and the construction of a setlist, rather than one stage performance or the making of a particular album. Springsteen’s official announcement places it in an autobiographical sequence alongside his memoir Born to Run and screen works including Springsteen on Broadway, Western Stars and Letter to You. For readers interested in Springsteen’s life story beyond the tour, Born to Run is the most direct companion: it is his memoir, not a making-of book about this film.
