Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio and video data sent or played each second. Mbps measures network capacity. For watching Netflix, its current guidance is at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K/UHD. For broadcasting a YouTube Live stream, the relevant figure is upload speed: choose an encoder bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check that your connection can sustain it with spare capacity.
What does bitrate mean?
Bitrate is the rate at which an encoded stream carries data, usually expressed in bits per second, kilobits per second (kbps), or megabits per second (Mbps). A higher bitrate can give an encoder more data with which to represent a picture and sound, but it is not a guarantee of better delivered quality by itself. Codec efficiency, resolution, frame rate, motion and detail in the source, and playback conditions all matter.
For a live broadcast, the ingest bitrate is the encoded data rate sent from the broadcaster to the streaming platform. Internet speed is the throughput available on a network connection. For a viewer, the relevant path is download; for a broadcaster sending a live feed, it is upload.
Is bitrate the same as internet speed?
No. Bitrate describes the stream; internet speed describes how much data the connection can transfer. A stream encoded at a particular bitrate does not mean every viewer needs that exact internet speed, and the broadcaster’s upload requirement is not the same as a viewer’s download requirement.

For live broadcasting, the upload connection must carry the stream continuously. A speed-test result is a measurement at a point in time, not a promise that the connection will remain steady at that rate. Household traffic, Wi-Fi conditions, and network fluctuations can reduce the capacity available to a stream. There is no universal formula that converts a resolution into a required home internet plan.
How many Mbps do you need to watch streaming video?
Netflix’s current Help Center guidance recommends a stable connection at or above these speeds for its playback quality levels. They are Netflix recommendations, not universal thresholds for every streaming service.

Netflix notes that many factors can affect streaming quality. If playback falls below the expected quality, check the connection using Fast.com or the network check in the Netflix app, and make sure the test reflects the device and connection you are actually using. How much upload speed do you need to live stream?
For live broadcasting, start with the platform’s recommended encoder bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to use. Then test the upload connection and confirm the stream remains stable while representative audio and movement are being sent. Do not treat the encoder bitrate as a universal internet-speed requirement for either broadcasters or viewers.

YouTube Live examples for 1080p
YouTube’s current encoder guide specifies different recommendations for different codecs at the same resolution and frame rate:

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not measurements of the internet speed every viewer needs. YouTube’s guide also gives 6 Mbps as the minimum and 17 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps. The appropriate setting depends on the selected codec and frame rate; consult YouTube’s full live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than applying one figure to every setup.

Allow for stability, not just a speed-test peak
YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and testing before going live. Make the test representative: use audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health. A brief peak speed result does not prove the connection can sustain a live feed, especially if other devices are using the network.
Twitch’s official indexed FAQ gives a platform-specific example of its guidance: for a configured 6 Mbps stream, it advises at least 8 Mbps upload, describing a bitrate-plus-30% buffer. - Resolution: Higher resolutions generally require more data to represent detail.
- Frame rate: More frames per second can require a higher bitrate and more encoding capacity.
- Codec: More efficient codecs can use different recommended rates than H.264 at the same resolution and frame rate.
- Content: Fast movement and fine detail are harder to encode than relatively static scenes.
- Network conditions: Stability, Wi-Fi quality, concurrent traffic, and routing affect the capacity available during viewing or broadcast.
How to check whether your connection is the problem
- If you are watching: measure download performance on the device and network being used. Netflix points to Fast.com and its app’s network check. Compare the result with the service’s guidance for your playback target.
- If you are broadcasting: measure upload performance, as YouTube recommends. Do the test under conditions close to the planned stream rather than relying only on a best-case result.
- Run a representative live test: match the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, audio, and typical movement. Check the platform’s stream-health indicators before relying on the setup for a real broadcast.
- Isolate local congestion: pause large uploads or downloads on other devices and, where practical, compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi. A faster broadband plan may not solve an encoder, device, Wi-Fi, or source-stream issue.
Common bitrate and Mbps problems
The stream buffers even though the speed test looks fast
A speed test is a snapshot; the connection may fluctuate or be shared by other traffic. Retest during the problem, check whether the device is on Wi-Fi, and compare performance with other devices paused. For Netflix, use its app network check or Fast.com. For a live broadcast, examine platform stream health and test upload stability.

The broadcaster’s settings show a bitrate, but viewers still ask for a speed number
Do not give the encoder bitrate as the required viewer download speed. A broadcaster sends data to the platform; viewers receive the platform’s stream. Use the platform’s playback guidance for viewers and its ingest and encoder guidance for broadcasters.
A 1080p setting does not match a bitrate chart
Check the codec and frame rate before changing the bitrate. YouTube’s recommendations differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265, and between 30 and 60 fps. Match the setting to the relevant row in YouTube’s current guide.
Quality drops during a live stream
Check upload stability and competing network traffic, then run a test with representative content and monitor stream health. Confirm that the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate are supported by the encoder and follow the platform’s recommendations. Raising the bitrate without confirming available, stable upload capacity can make the problem worse.
