Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Bills Mafia is the name for the Buffalo Bills’ fan community. It began as an online joke in 2010, then grew into a shared identity expressed through team support, tailgates, fan gatherings and charitable giving. The Bills organization later embraced the name, but the community is not a single legally constituted organization or charity.
That distinction helps make sense of the name: Bills Mafia can mean a broad network of supporters, an online fan identity, people gathering around games, or the name used on some team-associated gear. Those meanings overlap, but Bills Mafia is not a formal membership club, a single fundraising organization, or another name for the Bills franchise itself.
How did Bills Mafia get its name?
The commonly reported origin story starts in November 2010, after Bills receiver Stevie Johnson dropped a potential overtime game-winning touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnson posted about his frustration, and fans replied in support while criticizing ESPN reporter Adam Schefter for a delayed post about the play. After some of those fans were blocked, Buffalo fan Del Reid jokingly referred to them as “The Bills Mafia.” The name did not come from an official team naming contest; it started among fans online. The Bills’ 2020 account of the origin and the team’s relationship with the community and Visit Buffalo’s account describe this history retrospectively.
The word “mafia” is a playful fan label, not a claim that the group is a criminal organization. Its significance comes from the sense of belonging attached to following the Bills, particularly among fans in Western New York and Bills supporters elsewhere.

The details matter because the origin story is sometimes simplified to “the Bills gave their fans a nickname.” The documented account instead begins with a particular social-media exchange: Johnson’s disappointment after a missed opportunity, fans supporting him and taking issue with Schefter’s delayed post, and Reid joking about the fans who were blocked. It was a label for a group of fans in that moment, not a name selected by the team through a contest.
It is best to call this the commonly reported origin rather than imply that a fan community has one official founding document. The Bills and Visit Buffalo recount the story retrospectively. What is clear in those accounts is the progression: the name began among fans online, gained use among supporters and players, then became part of the team’s public language years later.
How an online hashtag became an in-person community
The name spread beyond social media as fans began using the hashtag and meeting face to face. The Bills report that about 70 people attended the first #BillsMafia Tweet Up tailgate on October 9, 2011, before a game against Philadelphia. Bills linebacker Nick Barnett helped popularize the hashtag, including by using it with a custom mouthpiece. Del Reid and Bills co-founder Breyon Harris later described that first tailgate as a point when an online group became an in-person community.
By 2015, according to the team, “Bills Mafia” was being shouted in Orchard Park parking lots and used by Bills backer bars around the country. These gatherings are one part of the identity: people also participate through online discussion, local watch parties and support for the team from outside Buffalo.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The 2011 gathering is a useful marker because it shows how an online label turned into something people could use to recognize one another in person. About 70 people attended that inaugural Tweet Up, according to the Bills. It was not a mass event on the scale the name might later suggest; it was an early gathering that helped make the hashtag feel like a community rather than just a phrase used in posts.
Players’ use of the hashtag also helped connect the fan-created label to the team’s wider audience. Nick Barnett’s adoption of #BillsMafia, including the custom mouthpiece, is one example the Bills highlight. The chronology is important: fans coined and used the name first, then players and, later, the organization helped carry it to a larger audience.
There is no single way to participate. A supporter might post about the team, watch with friends, attend a tailgate or join a Bills backer bar. Those activities can create a visible gathering, but online supporters and fans who live far from Buffalo are also part of the community’s broad identity. No membership, application or uniform set of traditions is required.
What does Bills Mafia mean to fans?
For many supporters, Bills Mafia signals loyalty and a shared family-like connection, not simply a particular style of tailgating. Visit Buffalo presents family and shared identity as central to the community. In a 2020 Bills interview, owner and president Kim Pegula described the name as authentic because it began with the community and emphasized its “family aspect.” Del Reid told Visit Buffalo that “The Bills are that extra family member in every household in Western New York.”

Public coverage often highlights exuberant tailgates, including fans leaping through folding tables. That spectacle is visible, but it is not the whole community or a requirement for belonging. Many fans express their connection in quieter ways: wearing team colors, watching games together, participating online or donating to causes.
There are several related but distinct parts to the identity. First is support for the Buffalo Bills as a team. Second is the social connection among supporters, including family-like bonds and gatherings. Third is the public reputation for spirited tailgating. Fourth is the visibility of charitable acts by some fans. None of those alone defines every person in Bills Mafia, and they are not mutually exclusive: one supporter may be active online, attend gatherings and contribute to a fundraiser, while another may simply identify as a Bills fan.

Pegula’s description is especially helpful for understanding why the label endured after the original joke. She said, “What I love about Bills Mafia is it is authentic. It started with Del, it started with our community. … Even though it’s a phrase that we’ve been using over the last several years, it’s more than just the words. It’s the family aspect of it.” The statement comes from a 2020 Bills account and reflects the organization’s view of a community-created phrase that acquired meaning through use.
Likewise, Reid’s remark to Visit Buffalo that the Bills are “that extra family member in every household in Western New York” describes the emotional place the team can hold for supporters. It is a way of explaining the community’s sense of shared identity, not a literal claim that every household supports the Bills or that the fan base is limited to Western New York. The team reports that the name had spread to Bills backer bars around the country by 2015.

Why is Bills Mafia associated with charitable giving?
Individual fundraisers and acts of generosity have become a prominent part of the community’s public image. The examples below are historical amounts reported by the named sources at the time; they are not a complete, audited total of Bills Mafia giving.
- Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation, 2017: The Bills reported in 2020 that donations exceeded $400,000 after the Bengals’ game-winning drive against Baltimore helped send Buffalo to the playoffs.
- A Chicago pediatric cancer center, 2018: The Bills reported that fans raised nearly $10,000 after a social media account called Bills Mafia “the laughingstock of the NFL.” The cited passage does not name the center.
- Oishei Children’s Hospital: Visit Buffalo reported that fundraising in honor of Patricia Allen, Josh Allen’s late grandmother, exceeded $1 million.
- Blessings in a Backpack: Visit Buffalo reported $500,000 in donations after Lamar Jackson was injured during Buffalo’s 2021 playoff win over Baltimore.
These stories illustrate why charitable action is part of the community’s reputation, but Bills Mafia is not itself a single charity and donations do not all pass through one organization. In the Bills’ 2020 account, Reid summed up the impulse by saying, “Giving is part of the Western New York DNA.”
The examples are meaningful, but they should be read carefully. The more-than-$400,000 figure concerns donations to the Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation after the 2017 Bills-Bengals game; it is not a measure of every contribution made by Bills fans. The nearly $10,000 for the Chicago pediatric cancer center is another specific reported fundraiser, and the cited Bills passage does not identify the center by name. The two totals cannot be combined into a complete community-wide accounting.
Visit Buffalo has also reported more than $1 million raised for Oishei Children’s Hospital in honor of Patricia Allen, Josh Allen’s late grandmother, and $500,000 for Blessings in a Backpack after Lamar Jackson was injured during Buffalo’s 2021 playoff win over Baltimore. These are useful examples of how a sports moment, a charitable cause and the fan network became connected in public coverage. They are dated figures reported by Visit Buffalo, not an audited, current cumulative total.

The sources here provide examples and snapshots, not a single ledger of every fan-led fundraiser, personal gift, business contribution or charitable campaign. The reported amounts differ in source, date and recipient. A careful account attributes each number to the outlet that reported it and avoids presenting an aggregate that the reported examples do not establish.
The charitable reputation also does not mean every supporter gives money or that all contributions are coordinated centrally. Some donations were tied to specific causes or moments and were reported as actions by fans. The clearest description is that charitable giving is one visible part of the community’s public identity, alongside team support and gatherings.
How Bills Mafia relates to the Bills organization
The name began with fans before the team adopted it in official storytelling and merchandise. In 2020, the Bills described a partnership with the fan community and designer Nicholas Avery for Bills Mafia gear. That partnership reflects the team’s embrace of a fan-created identity; it does not mean the club invented the name or that every person using it is part of a formal organization.
“Bills Mafia” can therefore refer broadly to Bills supporters who identify with the community, as well as to particular fan events, online activity or team-associated merchandise. Those uses overlap, but they are not interchangeable with the Buffalo Bills as a football organization.

The 2020 partnership is a useful example of the difference between origin and later recognition. The name had been in circulation for years and was already being used in parking lots and by backer bars. The team’s later collaboration around gear acknowledged and amplified an identity that fans had created; it did not retroactively make the organization the name’s originator.
Nor does the team’s use of the term turn the whole fan base into a single legal or administrative entity. The sources describe a community and a partnership, not a corporation, charity, membership list or centralized organization. That is why it is accurate to say the Bills embraced Bills Mafia, but inaccurate to imply that the club manages every fan activity or charitable effort carried out under that label.
For readers comparing ways of engaging with the community, three distinctions help. Online fan identity is about discussion and shared identification; in-person gatherings include tailgates, watch parties and backer bars. Team support is the common thread, while charitable activity is an important but not universal aspect of the public image. Finally, officially documented Bills gear and independent Buffalo-themed apparel are different kinds of products, even when both draw on the same fan identity. A person can participate in more than one of these ways.
Is 26 Shirts the same thing as Bills Mafia?
No. 26 Shirts is a Buffalo-themed T-shirt business founded by Del Reid, one of the people associated with Bills Mafia’s early history. The Bills’ 2023 profile says each shirt sold prompts a donation to a specified family in need or charitable organization in Buffalo. Buffalo State University’s 2021 profile similarly describes the company’s contributions as supporting families and local causes.
26 Shirts is a separate business connected to charitable work, not the governing body of Bills Mafia. Its donations should not be treated as a tally of all community giving. The Bills reported in 2023 that the company had donated over $1.8 million since it launched; that figure is the company’s cumulative total as reported that year, not a total for Bills Mafia overall.
The distinction is more than a technicality. Some Bills Mafia fundraisers and fan donations are described separately from 26 Shirts, while the company has its own shirt sales and donation model. A buyer should not assume that a donation made through 26 Shirts represents a donation from every Bills fan, or that a fundraiser associated with the wider fan community is administered by the company.
When explaining the relationship, it is reasonable to say that Reid’s work with the business is connected to the broader story of fan identity and giving. It is not accurate to turn that relationship into the claim that Bills Mafia is a business, that 26 Shirts speaks for the entire community, or that all Bills Mafia charitable activity passes through its sales. The source-reported figure of over $1.8 million is specific to the company and was reported by the Bills in 2023.
What to know about Bills Mafia merchandise
A Bills Mafia shirt may be official team-associated gear or apparel from an independent Buffalo-themed seller. The Bills documented a Bills Mafia gear collection in its 2020 partnership announcement, while 26 Shirts operates separately. A shirt’s wording alone does not establish that it is official merchandise or that its sale supports a charity; check the seller and the specific product’s stated terms.
The community itself is not a product or a membership program. Buying apparel is one optional way to show support, alongside attending a tailgate, joining a watch party, following the team online or contributing to a particular fundraiser.
If a shopper is trying to distinguish merchandise, the useful questions are who is selling the item and what the seller says about it. The existence of a team-documented gear collection shows that Bills Mafia-branded merchandise has been associated with an official Bills partnership. It does not establish that every item using the phrase is official, currently available, or connected to that partnership.

The same caution applies to charitable claims. The sources establish that 26 Shirts makes donations connected to shirt sales and that the Bills documented a Bills Mafia gear collaboration. They do not establish that every Bills Mafia shirt supports a cause, that every seller donates a portion of proceeds, or that any particular current listing is official or in stock. Confirm claims on the seller’s product page rather than relying on the design or the words “Bills Mafia” alone.
There is also no evidence in the cited sources of a verified current affiliate program for 26 Shirts. A reader should not infer a commercial partnership or charitable benefit from a link, product description or fan-community reference unless the seller explicitly confirms it. Merchandise is one expression of fandom, not a required way to belong.

By 2015, the team reported hearing and seeing the name in local parking lots and fan bars elsewhere. Bills Mafia is a useful example of how a fan identity can form outside a team’s marketing department and later become part of the team’s public story. A joke on social media acquired meaning through repeated use, shared gatherings and the relationships fans built around the team. The charitable examples add another dimension: some supporters have used that network to draw attention and donations to families and local causes, even though there is no single community-wide ledger or central charity.
That combination—team loyalty, belonging, exuberant traditions and independent acts of giving—helps explain why “Bills Mafia” names more than a crowd at a game. It describes a dispersed fan community whose identity was created by its members and ultimately recognized by the Bills.
It also explains why no single image captures the whole group. Tailgating and folding-table leaps may attract attention, but supporters also connect through quieter routines: following the team online, watching games together, wearing team apparel or taking part in a specific fundraiser. A fan does not need to attend a game, live in Buffalo, buy a shirt or make a donation to fit the broad meaning of Bills Mafia.
For a newcomer, the simplest way to understand the term is to keep its layers in view. It began as a joking name for fans in a social-media episode, became a hashtag and an in-person identity, and later gained the Bills organization’s recognition. Its reputation includes lively gatherings and charitable moments, but it remains a broad, informal community rather than one company, club or charity.
