Beyond the Gates is a CBS daytime serial about the Dupree family, whose wealth and influence shape life in an affluent gated community outside Washington, D.C. CBS introduced it as the first one-hour Black daytime soap and the first daytime drama to premiere since Passions in 1999. Those descriptions refer to a specific U.S. network milestone—not to the first appearance of Black characters or families in daytime television.
What is Beyond the Gates about?
The series takes place in Fairmont Crest, a fictional leafy Maryland suburb near Washington, D.C. At its center are the Duprees, a powerful multigenerational Black family living in a wealthy gated community. CBS’s description sets the family’s secrets and scandals against the community’s polished, manicured surface.

What does “the first Black daytime soap in 35 years” mean?
CBS called Beyond the Gates “the first-ever one-hour Black daytime soap” and said it was the first daytime drama to premiere since Passions in 1999. The series premiered on February 24, 2025. The “35 years” framing points to the gap between this launch and Generations, an NBC soap that ran from 1989 to 1991 and featured a Black family from the outset.

The wording needs its qualifiers. CBS’s claim is about a one-hour daytime soap; the broader launch milestone is a new daytime drama on a U.S. network. The Associated Press described the show as the first Black-led daytime soap opera and noted its predominantly Black main cast. None of these formulations means Black characters or families were absent from daytime television during the intervening years.
CBS News’s February 24, 2025 coverage and the Associated Press report from the premiere give the milestone additional context.

Why center a wealthy Black family?
The family’s prosperity is part of the creators’ stated purpose, not just a backdrop for the usual soap-opera conflicts. Val Jean told CBS News, “I just wanted to see people that looked like me. I didn’t want downtrodden Black people. I wanted rich, messy Black people that carry the stories.” Executive producer Sheila Ducksworth said what she felt was missing was “one that centered on the Black experience.”
That focus does not make the characters uncomplicated symbols of success. The premise promises family secrets and scandals, with the Duprees carrying the drama. Star Daphnée Duplaix told the AP, “This is normal. It’s not a fluke. It’s not a one-off. Black excellence is everywhere.” The intended shift is in who occupies the center of a familiar daytime serial and whose experiences drive its stories.
