Auto-Tune is pitch-correction software from Antares Audio Technologies. It analyzes a sung or played note, measures its pitch, and shifts that pitch toward a target note in a key and scale the producer chooses. Corrected gently, the result is a polished vocal that still sounds like the singer. Corrected very fast, the voice jumps between notes with a stepped, electronic quality, and that sound is why “auto-tune” is also used as a slang term for the effect itself.
How the correction works
Antares describes pitch correction as a three-part process. This is the manufacturer’s overview of the general method, not a universal account of every pitch-correction product or algorithm.
- Detect. The software analyzes the incoming note and measures its pitch.
- Compare. It compares that pitch with the notes allowed by the selected key and scale, or with a desired target tone.
- Shift. It adjusts the signal toward the nearest target note.
Why the key and scale matter
The key and scale tell the software which pitches count as correct. Antares’s current best-practices guide recommends identifying the song’s key and scale before setting up correction. Its Chromatic mode is different: it corrects to the nearest semitone, so every semitone is a valid target rather than only the notes of a scale. A wrong key setting therefore pulls correct notes toward the wrong targets, which is one common reason a correction sounds off even when the software is working as designed.
Why it can sound robotic
The main control behind the hard-tuned sound is Retune Speed, which sets how quickly the software moves a note to its target. Antares’s current guide gives approximate Retune Speed ranges for its products. These are manufacturer guidance, not guaranteed outcomes, because the voice, the performance, the scale, and the other settings all change the result.

| Retune Speed (Antares guidance) | Typical result described by Antares |
|---|---|
| 0–5 ms | Instant correction; the iconic hard-tuned effect |
| 10–30 ms | Tight, polished correction that keeps some expression |
| 30–50 ms | Natural correction that preserves vibrato and emotion |
| 50–100+ ms | Subtle correction, suited to strong performances |
The practical point is that the robotic character is a setting outcome, not a fault. A fast Retune Speed on a sustained note removes the natural drift that makes a voice sound human, and that drift is exactly what slower settings leave in place.
Humanize and Flex Tune
Current AutoTune editions add two controls aimed at this problem. Humanize, according to Antares, adds realism to sustained notes when fast retune settings are in use. Flex Tune preserves more of the singer’s expressive vocal movement.

What it can and cannot tune
Antares states that current AutoTune is designed for a well-isolated, monophonic source: one voice, or one instrument playing a single pitch at a time. This is the single most important expectation to set. Pitch correction is not a general tool for fixing every note in a finished mix.
- Works as intended: a solo vocal recorded on its own track, or a single-note instrument line.
- Not accurately correctable with this workflow: several voices on one track, such as a stacked chorus or doubled harmonies.
- Not accurately correctable with this workflow: an instrument playing simultaneous pitches, such as a chord.
Recording quality matters
Antares recommends starting with a clean vocal recording. Its guidance covers four points:

- Co-developed with Antares Audio Technologies to bring together everything you need for a polished, modern vocal sound, in the studio or live
- The rackmount processor includes a mic preamp, compression, de-essing, mic & tube modeling and Antares’ famous Auto-Tune pitch correction
- Perfect for live performance, house of worship or studio use, the TA-1VP brings your vocal sound into the 21st century
- A high-quality XLR microphone input is provided on the TA-1VP front panel, with phantom power for condenser mics
- Balanced TRS input and outputs are located on the rear panel, including a Double Track out for simulating doubled vocals
- A treated space with minimal noise and reflections.
- Consistent microphone technique from take to take.
- A quality microphone suited to vocals.
The microphone is a recording aid. It captures the sound, but the pitch correction happens in the software. Poor input usually makes correction harder and more audible, so the recording stage is worth as much attention as the plugin settings.
Current Antares editions
Antares’s support materials from September 2026 describe three tiers. Names and features may change, so check the manufacturer’s pages before buying or following a tutorial built around a specific version.
Rank #4
- The FV01 vocal effects Corrector is primarily a pitch-correction pedal that offers everything from pitch correction to full-blown effects overload when your input is a microphone.
- The FV01 features three separate vocal effects as indicated by the TONE LED displayed prominently in the center of the pedal.
- Singers can switch between WARM, BRIGHT, and NORMAL modes, with each mode indicating the type of EQ manipulation provided by the pedal.
- It can be used as a microphone amplifier or a traditional stompbox. Optional 48V phantom power for condenser microphones.
- Two different output modes for a mixed-signal or individual signals from guitar and microphone.
| Product (name as of September 2026) | Workflow emphasis described by Antares |
|---|---|
| AutoTune (formerly marketed as AutoTune 2026) | Streamlined correction |
| AutoTune Advanced | Adds controls for vibrato, formant, and note targeting |
| Auto-Tune Pro 11 | Detailed graph editing, timing correction, and other advanced workflows |
The useful comparison is workflow depth rather than sound alone. Three questions usually decide which tier fits:
- Do you need a quick, streamlined correction, or hands-on control over vibrato and formants?
- Do you need to edit individual notes on a graph?
- Do you need to correct timing, not just pitch?
Where the name and the sound came from
Antares’s 2026 retrospective says its founder, Andy Hildebrand, adapted mathematical principles associated with seismic data to detect and modify musical pitch. The same account says Cher’s 1998 hit “Believe” is often cited as an early mainstream track to showcase the robotic vocal sound. This history comes from the manufacturer. Independent corroboration of the origin story is not established here, and it is not established that “Believe” was the first use of the effect.

Brand name and everyday usage
Auto-Tune is a registered product name, but it is often used loosely. Listeners and critics commonly say “auto-tuned” to describe any heavily corrected vocal, whether or not Antares software produced it. When you read a credit or review, the strict meaning is the Antares product, and the broader meaning is the sound it helped popularize.
In short, Auto-Tune is a pitch-correction tool that works best on a clean, single voice, and its audible character depends almost entirely on how quickly it is set to move notes.
