It follows Roy from childhood in Kerala and young adulthood in Delhi to her life as a writer and political activist, while asking how a mother can be both a source of shelter and a source of pain.
What is Mother Mary Comes to Me about?
The memoir traces Roy’s life through her relationship with Mary, an educator and activist whose influence shaped her daughter’s childhood and later work. The US publisher describes a journey from Kerala to Delhi in the 1970s, through Roy’s creative pursuits and political writing, and onto the global stage. The story of a family sits alongside changes in India and Roy’s development as a public writer. Penguin Random House’s book description and reading guide outline that wider arc.
Roy’s phrase for her mother, “my shelter and my storm,” captures the book’s central tension. Mary is remembered as a powerful presence who could offer love and influence while also causing hurt. The memoir does not reduce her to either a saint or a villain.
Why did Roy write about her mother?
Mary Roy’s death in September 2022 gave the memoir its immediate starting point, but Roy says the book had been taking shape for much longer. In a statement announcing it, she wrote, “I have been writing this book all my life.” She also described the loss in explicitly literary terms: “Even more than a daughter mourning the passing of her mother, I mourn her as a writer who has lost her most enthralling subject.” The publisher announcement carries both quotations.

How does the memoir portray Mary Roy?
Mary appears as a forceful educator and activist, as well as a difficult parent. The Guardian’s review describes her leaving her husband, taking Arundhati and her brother Lalith south, and eventually establishing a home and school in Kerala. It presents her as visionary and formidable, while also acknowledging the conflict that her forceful personality could create. The Guardian review offers one independent critical account of that family history.
These episodes are part of Roy’s retrospective account, not a neutral biography of Mary. The Women’s Prize discussion guide draws attention to the way the book moves between memory and imagination, affection and painful experience. Roy writes, “Most of us are a living, breathing soup of memory and imagination – and we may not be the best arbiters of which is which”. That uncertainty is part of the memoir’s method: it reflects on how a daughter remembers, rather than claiming that memory is an objective record. The Women’s Prize guide also frames the book around the difficult question of what makes a good mother.

What kind of reading experience is it?
Although intimate in its focus on family, the book is not limited to domestic recollection. Its account of Roy’s writing and political activism gives the mother-daughter story a broader public context. Readers interested in how a writer’s life and work develop together will find that trajectory alongside the family history; readers looking for a simple verdict on Mary will encounter a more ambivalent portrait.
