What Alan Jackson said about his diagnosis
Jackson discussed the condition in a 2021 interview on TODAY. The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association’s September 28, 2021 account quoted him saying, “I have this neuropathy and neurological disease,” and, “It’s genetic that I inherited from my daddy … There’s no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for years.” The account says he described effects on his ability to walk and perform on stage. Those are Jackson’s reported effects. They should not be conflated with the full range of symptoms that can occur in people with CMT. An Associated Press report on his final concert in 2026 repeats the diagnosis chronology, but does not provide a detailed medical update. Associated Press report
What Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is
CMT is a group of genetic conditions affecting peripheral nerves—the nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord with the rest of the body. It can affect nerves involved in movement and sensation. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) describes CMT as the most common inherited neuropathy and says more than 100 genes are linked to it. The condition is not one uniform experience. Type, genetic cause, age of onset, and individual differences can shape symptoms and severity; even people with the same mutation may be affected differently. Symptoms often progress slowly, but the pattern varies.
How CMT can affect walking and movement
Depending on the person, CMT may cause weakness and muscle loss, often in the feet and lower legs. Some people have difficulty lifting the front of the foot, balance problems, high arches, or curled toes. Numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness in the hands can also occur. How CMT is diagnosed
Diagnosis generally begins with medical and family histories and a neurological examination. Depending on the case, clinicians may use nerve-conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), genetic testing, or, less commonly, a nerve biopsy. Jackson’s public account indicates that he had received a diagnosis roughly a decade before speaking about it publicly in 2021; it does not identify which tests he underwent. Can Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease be cured?
There is no cure for CMT, but care can address symptoms and support mobility. NINDS describes several options, selected according to a person’s needs:

What is known about Jackson’s health now?

What CMT research fundraising has been reported?
The CMT Research Foundation reported in 2026 that Jackson’s Last Call tour raised more than $2.25 million for CMT research through ticket sales and matching contributions.
