A drone in music is a sustained or regularly repeated pitch—or a group of pitches—that provides a steady sonic layer while other musical elements change. It can sit behind a melody, give performers a tonal reference, or become the main focus of a piece.
What does a drone do in music?
A drone creates a point of continuity. Against that stable sound, changes in melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, or volume can become easier to hear. The effect depends on context: a drone may anchor a tune, add tension, or draw attention to the sound itself.
A drone does not have to be one note held without interruption. A player may re-articulate a pitch, or a group of pitches may recur, while still creating the impression of a sustained layer. The drone can remain throughout a work or appear only in one section. How Music Really Works describes drones as including single notes, repeated pitches, octaves, and related notes.
What is a drone note?
A drone note is the pitch—or one of the pitches—in that persistent layer. It may sound alone, in octaves, or alongside harmonically related pitches. The note is not necessarily the melody’s changing center; instead, it can serve as a steady reference against which the melody moves.

Drone texture versus drone music
A drone is a musical effect or texture; drone music is a style that makes sustained or repeated tones central and often develops them gradually. A brief drone in a folk song, classical work, rock track, metal piece, or ambient recording does not by itself make the whole work drone music. In drone music, the tone and its subtle changes may be the primary material. MasterClass discusses this distinction and identifies examples across traditions and instruments.
Instruments and traditions that use drones
Tanpura or tambura
The four-string tanpura (also called tambura) provides a drone in Indian classical music. Its recurring sound supplies a tonal foundation for the performance; it is not simply a melody instrument playing a long note.

Bagpipes
In bagpipe music, drone pipes sustain pitches while another pipe carries the melody. This makes the relationship between a steady background and moving tune especially clear.
Didgeridoo, hurdy-gurdy, and shruti box
A didgeridoo can produce a continuous drone; circular breathing is one way a player can maintain the sound. A hurdy-gurdy and a shruti box are other instruments that can provide drone tones.

Synthesizers and electronic sound
A synthesizer can create a drone with an oscillator or another sustained sound. Electronic production makes it possible to hold a tone steadily, layer pitches, or shape the drone’s timbre over time. Drones can be acoustic, electronic, instrumental, or vocal, and the examples above are not exhaustive.

Drone practices have longstanding roles in traditions such as Indian classical music and bagpipe music; they did not originate with modern Western minimalism. In an overview of the modern genre, a Massachusetts College of Art and Design-hosted copy of a Wikipedia article associates La Monte Young’s sustained-tone experiments and his 1958 Trio for Strings with the development of minimalist drone music. The article reports that Young wrote in 2000 that “the sustained tone branch of minimalism, also known as ‘drone music,’ is a fertile area for exploration.” That is Young’s description of a branch of minimalism, not a universal definition of every drone or drone tradition.
