The phrase is informal and humorous, and it is used mainly when someone wants to separate the paper form of a work from its electronic counterpart.
What the phrase means
The term refers to a physical, printed edition of a publication. It is most often heard when a publication exists in both forms, as a paper book and an e-book, or as a printed magazine and a website or app. Wiktionary labels the expression slang and idiomatic and explains the wordplay as a reference to trees being the raw material of paper. Dictionary.com and Collins English Dictionary give the shorter gloss “printed on paper” and use a book as the example.
The phrase is not the name of a particular product, special edition or release. Any print copy of a work can be described as its dead tree edition when the contrast with digital matters.
Tone: teasing, not always hostile
The expression carries a mild dismissive edge. Its wordplay suggests that paper is old-fashioned, and some writers use it that way, especially when praising digital access. Context decides the effect. Among readers and publishers who simply need to say which version they mean, it is often affectionate or neutral. A 2015 blog post on the subject, from a magazine-industry commentator, describes the phrase as slang from the early Internet period and says its connotations have shifted over time. That account is retrospective commentary and does not establish when the phrase first appeared.

Neutral alternatives
If the joke would be out of place, use a plainer term. The table below shows the usual choices and when each fits.
| Term | Tone | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Dead tree edition | Informal, humorous, can be dismissive | Casual writing where the print-versus-digital contrast is obvious to the reader |
| Print edition | Neutral | Publisher listings, catalogues, formal or professional copy |
| Printed version | Neutral | General descriptions of a work that also exists online or as an e-book |
| Hard copy | Neutral, formal | A physical document, which may be less specific to a publication’s edition |
Where the phrase came from
The available references do not establish who coined the phrase or when it was first written down. The 2015 blog post dates the slang to the early Internet period, and it cites a 2003 glossary definition by William R. Tracey that describes the paper version of a periodical as “derogatory cyberspeak.” That glossary text was not checked directly, so it should be treated as a secondhand report, not a verified quotation. Avoid assigning the phrase a precise origin date or author unless stronger historical evidence turns up.

When to use it
- Use it in casual writing or conversation when the print-versus-digital contrast is the point.
- Use “print edition” or “printed version” in catalogue entries, reviews, academic writing and anything published under a formal style.
- Use “hard copy” when you mean a physical document in general rather than a specific publication’s edition.
- If you are describing a title that exists in several formats, name the format directly (paperback, hardcover, e-book, audio) where you can, since “dead tree” covers all printed editions at once.
