Bun is a noun-self neopronoun: a noun-like word used in place of a pronoun. A common set is bun/buns/bunself, but forms can vary. Use the forms the person gives you, and ask if you are unsure.
What does “bun” mean as a pronoun?
Ohio State University describes noun-self pronouns as pre-existing words adapted for pronoun use, and lists bun/bunself as an example. Its glossary defines neopronouns as words created to serve as pronouns without expressing gender. A pronoun set does not, by itself, tell you someone’s gender.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst Stonewall Center also lists bun/buns as derived from “bunny.” That explains the word’s association, but the person using the pronouns determines which forms they prefer.
How do you use bun pronouns?
Change the form to fit the sentence’s grammatical role. These examples use one documented set; follow the individual’s stated forms rather than assuming everyone uses the same ones.

Possessive forms vary between references: one lists bun’s, while another example set uses buns. If you do not know which form a person uses, ask rather than choosing for them.
What if you are not sure which forms someone uses?
Ask the person directly, or check how they have introduced their pronouns. Ohio State University’s guidance is: “Not every individual person uses pronouns the same way, ask for clarification if necessary.” Once you know the forms, use them consistently in speech and writing.

Are bun pronouns standardized or widely used?
No single fixed set applies to every person. A 2022 paper from the Association for Computational Linguistics gives bun/buns/bunself as an example and notes that neopronoun sets can evolve. Bun is a documented example, not evidence that every user follows identical forms.
The sources cited here do not establish how many people use bun pronouns, so a prevalence figure cannot be given from them.
