Josh Eggington, the Noongar-Wongi artist known as Flewnt, says his drive comes from hip-hop’s voice for people facing oppression, his family’s history of fighting for Aboriginal rights, and a responsibility to give back to his community. He describes music and youth work as ways to put those commitments into practice.
Hip-hop gave Eggington a way to tell stories like his own
In a 2020 interview with National Indigenous Times, Eggington recalled discovering American hip-hop when he was 11. Its political voice resonated with him: he heard music about Black struggle and people challenging power, and wanted to tell stories from his own experience.
“It’s the music for Black struggle. It was a voice for the oppressed and I identified with that. I wanted to tell my stories the same way I was hearing from those mob over there,” he said.
That influence is more than a sound or genre in his account. Hip-hop offered a form for speaking about identity and injustice, and for making space for stories he felt needed to be heard.

Eggington described writing as an intuitive process rather than a fixed routine. In the 2020 interview, he said he is usually alone in a creative space, thinking until an idea arrives and he begins to write.
“I’ll be sitting there thinking and . . . it’s as if spirit moves through you. You just start writing.”

He framed giving back as an obligation, especially for someone with a platform to speak about issues affecting the community:
“My community has given me everything that I am today, and it’s only right that I give back and I’ve said this many times, but as a blackfulla, I feel like we are obligated to serve our community in some sort of way, especially if you have the platform to be able to speak about important issues that affect your community,”

Youth work makes the commitment practical
Eggington’s music sits alongside work with young people. National Indigenous Times reported in 2020 that he ran school programs and worked with incarcerated young people. That interview also described Kyana Studios as a planned space for young men recently released from detention; the account establishes the plan at that time, not that the studio was later built.
Later coverage documents continued youth engagement. In 2024, ABC News reported that Eggington mentored young people in custody and students disengaged from mainstream school. The report also covered his relationship with his son, Inkabee, and his interest in passing on values through family and storytelling. Eggington described that work as “actually about storytelling and being a voice for the oppressed.”
His connection between music and service is also reflected in “Kya Kyana,” a song inspired by his identity and his family’s cultural grounding. Community Arts Network says it won Best Song and Best Hip-Hop Song at the 2018 WA NAIDOC Music Awards. PerthNow describes the awards as the “2018/2019 WA NAIDOC Music Awards,” so the accounts differ in how they date them.
