Cage discussed those ideas as creative possibilities, not evidence that sentient AI is imminent. His account, in a 2019 GamesBeat interview, also describes an AI-music demonstration and the human-versus-machine themes that shaped the game.
What research did David Cage do for Detroit: Become Human?
In the GamesBeat interview published June 29, 2019 and updated June 19, 2025, writer and director David Cage said Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near was an early starting point for thinking about a future in which machines might surpass human intelligence. He then explored questions about machine intelligence, consciousness and emotion as material for the story.
Cage described two possibilities rather than settling a scientific question: intelligence might exist without consciousness, or consciousness might emerge from sufficiently powerful brains, including artificial ones. The premise he drew from that tension was how people might react if another intelligent species appeared with consciousness and emotions. As he put it, “How will react as a species when another species appears that’s intelligent, that has consciousness and emotions?”
The AI-composed music anecdote
Cage recalled visiting labs and seeing a demonstration in which an algorithm analyzed hours of jazz piano and then continued in the pianist’s style. He said he could not tell when the performance shifted from the person to the algorithm. The interview does not name the lab, date or system, so this is best understood as Cage’s recollection of a demonstration—not independently documented evidence of a general creative capability.

He said the team considered whether AI might write books, tell stories, compose music or create paintings, and brought some of those ideas into the game. Those questions helped establish the fiction’s imaginative territory; they do not show that current AI systems possess consciousness or human-like emotions.
How the game turns those questions into a story
Detroit: Become Human uses a branching narrative about Kara, Connor and Markus. Quantic Dream describes player choices as affecting the characters and Detroit’s fate on its official game page. Rather than presenting a technical account of AI, the story asks players to navigate the consequences of treating androids as tools, people or something in between.

Cage said the game deliberately makes androids the sympathetic side and humans the antagonistic side. He also framed human dependence on technology and phones as part of its themes. These are his choices and concerns as a storyteller, not a consensus claim about technology or a prediction about how society will respond to AI.
What inspired the androids’ design?
In a June 22, 2017 PlayStation Blog interview, Cage said Quantic Dream wanted its fictional androids to feel biological. He described “bio-components” that function like organs and blue blood that transports energy. Their eyes were designed with subtle movements to make them seem alive.

Their appearance also reflects their roles. Cage explained that the team designed androids around the work they were made to do, asking, “Why give superpowers to a teacher or to a nurse? It doesn’t make any sense,” The same interview says 20 people worked on clothing design over two years. The biological details, occupational design and production figure all describe the game’s fictional world and creative process; they are not evidence that comparable general-purpose androids exist.
Androids as everyday products in the game’s world
The game is set in a fictional Detroit in 2038, where androids are commonplace and the story follows three of them. Cage compared their everyday role to smartphones: tools intended to simplify life, with a market built around different models and customization. That is worldbuilding, not a real-world market forecast.

How the interview relates to the real science of AI
The useful distinction is between what machines can do and whether they have subjective experience. Cage’s interview raises the possibility that intelligence could exist without consciousness, as well as the competing idea that consciousness might emerge from sufficiently powerful brains. It does not resolve that debate or report a demonstration of conscious AI.
The jazz-piano story concerns a system continuing a musical style after analyzing examples, as Cage remembered it. Even if a machine produces convincing creative work, that performance alone does not establish that it feels, understands or has a point of view. The interview provides a creative origin story and Cage’s questions, not a scientific test of machine consciousness.
