Strange Supreme tells Captain Carter he is hunting beings who could destroy universes. In reality he is feeding captives into the Forge to rebuild the reality he lost while trying to save Christine Palmer. Peggy refuses, frees the captives, and fights him. Strange falls into the Forge. His universe comes back with Christine alive, but Stephen Strange was never born in it. The Watcher then returns the captives to their realities and offers Peggy a ride home, which she turns into a request for the scenic route.
The episode is titled “What If… Strange Supreme Intervened?” Some coverage spells it “Intervenes,” which is the same episode. The plot details here come from detailed recaps and creator interviews published in late December 2023 and January 2024, not from a published transcript, so dialogue is paraphrased unless a line is marked as a direct quote.
The setup: a mission built on a half-truth
Strange Supreme approaches Captain Carter with a multiversal capture operation. He presents it as containment: gathering beings powerful enough to end universes before they can do so. The pitch works because it targets Peggy’s own history. She lost her chance with Steve Rogers, and Strange speaks to that loss directly.
The cover story falls apart in the Hydra-won reality, where the fugitive Kahhori tells Peggy what the captures are really for. Strange is harvesting powerful beings to power the Forge, and he intends to use it to resurrect the universe he destroyed. His altruism, in her account, hides a personal goal: bringing Christine back.

Peggy’s refusal
Peggy is not indifferent to the offer. She weighs Strange’s appeal to grief and considers what it would mean to have the person she lost back. She still refuses to make the same trade Strange has made. Ready Steady Cut reads her decision as recognizing that Steve would not want this sacrifice. That is one reading of her choice, not a line of dialogue that settles it.
The distinction matters for the episode’s central idea. Peggy’s position is that loving someone does not give you the right to sacrifice strangers to get them back. Strange’s plan treats those lives as fuel, and Peggy will not accept that cost even for Steve.

The battle and the illusion
Once Peggy and Kahhori release the captives, the finale turns into a multiversal fight. Strange tries one more tactic. He shows Peggy an illusion of her Project Rebirth past, offering a life alongside Steve. She sees through it and attacks him.
The women use weapons from across the multiverse, including Hela’s helmet, Thor’s hammer, and Wenwu’s rings. Kahhori then helps send the captives back to their own realities. The Infinity Stones are the most striking part of this sequence, and they are handled differently from anything else in the fight.

How Peggy handles the Infinity Stones
Kahhori sends the Stones to Peggy, and Peggy is able to wield them. Director Bryan Andrews explained the visual in ComicBook.com’s January 2024 coverage. He said that Kahhori’s power surrounds the Stones when they are sent, creating a layer of Space Stone energy around them.
Andrews’s explanation is specific to this episode’s visual. It is not a general rule for how the Stones can be handled in the franchise. His exact words: “You have to really freeze frame and take a look. When Kahhori sends the Stones to her, they’re surrounded in Kahhori’s power so there’s a layer of Space Stone energy,” Andrews said.

Strange’s grief takes a monstrous form
Strange’s grief becomes a monstrous manifestation during the fight. Peggy strikes it, and that blow helps expose the human Strange underneath. The battle does not stop the Forge’s catastrophe, though. Strange cannot control what he set in motion, and he falls into it. Peggy survives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The Forge, the sacrifice, and what is restored
Strange’s goal is achieved only through his own absence. His universe returns, Christine is alive, and Stephen Strange never exists in that reality. The episode presents this as a sacrifice, and it stops short of saying it redeems the deaths and destruction his plan caused. Whether the sacrifice is enough to offset those costs is a moral judgment, and reasonable viewers disagree on it.

The ending settles several things and leaves others open:
- Settled in the episode: Strange’s capture mission was a cover for the Forge plan, and Peggy refused to take part.
- Settled in the episode: Strange falls into the Forge, and his universe is restored with Christine alive.
- Settled in the episode: Stephen Strange does not exist in the restored reality.
- Left open: whether Strange is redeemed. The episode frames his end as a sacrifice, but the question is interpretation.
- Left open: any future MCU crossover or Peggy’s next mission. The ending does not name either one.
Where the ending leaves Peggy
The Watcher reports that the rescued beings have returned to their own realities, according to Ready Steady Cut’s recap. He offers Peggy a trip home. She asks for the scenic route. The line hints at further travel but does not name a destination or a next mission, so readers should not treat it as a setup for a specific storyline.
What the head writer said about the tone
Head writer A.C. Bradley explained that the writers worked on the season from January to October 2020. That period overlapped with the onset of COVID-19, Black Lives Matter protests, and a US presidential election. She described the series as a sanctuary, and her explanation of the finale centers on its hopeful instinct. Her most quotable line: “Sometimes, it’s just more fun to save the world.” — A.C. Bradley, head writer, as quoted by ComicBook.com on 30 December 2023.
