Her account includes the scrutiny she says she faced because of her faith while serving at the State Department, but it is also a story of upbringing across countries, relationships, marriage, and motherhood—not a claim to speak for every South Asian Muslim or political aide.
A life between places, family, and public service
Abedin is the daughter of Indian and Pakistani intellectuals and advocates. Simon & Schuster describes her as having spent parts of her childhood among Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She was born in the U.S., raised in Saudi Arabia, and returned to the U.S. in 1993, according to the publisher’s author biography.
That movement across countries is part of the memoir’s context, rather than a single explanation for Abedin’s identity. In a 2022 Hindustan Times interview, she recalled that books helped connect her to South Asian heritage while growing up in Saudi Arabia and later in the United States. Her account brings together family inheritance, faith, and the experience of making a life in American public service.
What the memoir says about Muslim identity and political work
Abedin has described the book as addressing “what it is to be a Muslim American in this country.” In the Hindustan Times interview, she recalled being accused of not being patriotic because she is Muslim while working at the U.S. State Department in 2012. That is her recollection of a specific experience; it should not be taken as a universal account of Muslim Americans or everyone who works in politics.

The memoir’s “both/and” framing makes room for identities and roles that coexist: a Muslim American with South Asian family roots, and a professional whose career brought her close to prominent political leaders. The book presents these as dimensions of Abedin’s own life, not as a representative portrait of a whole community.
From aide to author of her own story
Abedin’s career began with an internship in Hillary Clinton’s First Lady’s office in 1996. She later worked in the White House and Senate, served as traveling chief of staff on Clinton’s 2008 campaign, became Deputy Chief of Staff at the State Department in 2009, and was Vice Chair of Hillary for America in 2016, according to Simon & Schuster’s biography.

That professional history explains why public attention often centered on Abedin as an aide. The publisher presents Both/And as her opportunity to tell her own story. A review excerpt reproduced on the publisher’s page quotes The Cut calling it a chance for her to assert herself after a lifetime as a “trusted and silent helpmate.” The phrasing belongs to that review, while the memoir itself offers Abedin’s perspective on the experiences behind a career often viewed from the outside.
In a publisher announcement, Abedin said: “Writing this book gave me the opportunity to reflect on my own life – from the nurturing family I was privileged to be born into, to working for one of the most compelling leaders of our time.” The statement captures the book’s movement between private foundations and work in public life.

More than a memoir about political work
A work-only reading would leave out much of the book’s stated scope. The publisher describes it as engaging with family, legacy, identity, faith, marriage, motherhood, and work. A 2022 Hindustan Times interview likewise presents it as a memoir about being an American Muslim and about Abedin’s relationships with Clinton and Anthony Weiner.
Those subjects sit alongside the account of her career, rather than serving as footnotes to it. The book’s central value for readers interested in identity and power is its personal vantage point: one person’s effort to understand how family, belief, intimate life, and professional obligations have shaped one another.
