As of 8 October 2026, Russell Brand had pleaded not guilty to seven criminal charges: three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The charges concern allegations involving six women and conduct said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009. His trial was scheduled to begin on 12 October 2026; no verdict had been reached at the time of the latest available court report.
What are the charges against Russell Brand?
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorised charges following a police investigation. The seven charges reported by October 2026 are three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. They relate to allegations made by six women about conduct said to have taken place from 1999 to 2009. These are criminal charges, not findings that the alleged events occurred.
How did the case develop?
The original charges
On 4 April 2025, the Metropolitan Police announced that Brand had been charged with two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and two counts of sexual assault. The allegations concerned four women and alleged offences between 1999 and 2005. The Metropolitan Police announcement set out the original charges.
Two further charges
On 23 December 2025, the CPS announced one further count of rape and one further count of sexual assault. These charges concerned separate reports by two additional women relating to 2009. The CPS announcement said the charges followed a Metropolitan Police investigation.

The total by October 2026
The original five charges plus the two additional charges made seven in all: three rape counts, three sexual-assault counts and one indecent-assault count. October court reporting described the allegations as involving six women and spanning 1999–2009. AAP reported on the pre-trial hearing on 6 October 2026.
How has Brand responded, and what is the trial status?
Brand pleaded not guilty to the additional charges on 24 February 2026, according to Associated Press reporting. By the October pre-trial hearing, he had pleaded not guilty to all seven charges. A not-guilty plea is a denial of the charges; it is not a court decision on the evidence.

The trial had not begun as of 8 October 2026. ITV reported in March that it had been delayed from June until October. After a pre-trial hearing on 6 October, AAP reported that proceedings were due to start on Monday, 12 October 2026, and were expected to last up to ten weeks. That was the scheduled timetable, not a report of a trial or outcome. See ITV’s March report and AAP’s October report.

The CPS decides whether to authorise a prosecution; it does not decide whether a defendant is guilty. Guilt is for the criminal court to determine. The CPS stated that distinction in its original charging announcement. In its announcement of the further charges, the CPS also reminded the public that proceedings were active and the defendant had the right to a fair trial: “The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.”

Accordingly, the accurate description at the time of the latest cited court report is that Brand faced seven charges and had pleaded not guilty. The allegations remained for the court to decide.
