Since playing Neville Longbottom in all eight Harry Potter films, Matthew Lewis has worked across stage, television and film, taking on roles in crime stories, comedy, romance and period drama. His latest documented lead role is Canon Daniel Clement in the 2025 mystery adaptation Murder Before Evensong. Lewis has said he sought parts far removed from Neville—and still hopes a new adaptation will include one of Neville’s most affecting book scenes.
He played Neville for a decade, then sought a different kind of role
Lewis began acting as a child and won the role of Neville Longbottom at age 11. He appeared in all eight films in the series. Around the franchise’s conclusion, he made a deliberate move onto the stage: his first stage role was in Agatha Christie’s play Verdict.
In a 2011 interview, Lewis explained why he wanted to try something new: “When you’ve played the same character for 10 years you don’t want to become typecast, you want to be seen in a different way.” The stage role was an early sign of a broader effort to avoid being defined only by the schoolboy wizard.
His post-Potter work has moved between genres and formats
Lewis’s screen credits after Harry Potter include the television series The Syndicate, Bluestone 42 and Ripper Street, as well as the films Me Before You and Baby Done. He has also appeared in the period drama All Creatures Great & Small. This is a selection of documented credits, not a complete filmography.

The roles range from historical crime and comedy to romance and period drama—different settings and characters from Neville. In a 2025 interview, Lewis described many of his later parts as “so different, so detached” from his best-known role. He also spoke about his interest in period productions and history, saying he enjoyed the chance to inhabit those worlds and wear their costumes.
Murder Before Evensong gives him a new lead role
In the 2025 television adaptation of Richard Coles’s Canon Clement Mysteries, Lewis plays Canon Daniel Clement, a rector in a fictional English village. The story is set in the 1980s and adapts Coles’s novel Murder Before Evensong.

Lewis said Coles’s name helped draw him to the project. The role also fits the pattern he has described: choosing work that takes him into a world and character distinct from Neville. His interest in history made the period setting part of the appeal.

In an October 2026 report, Lewis reflected on a scene from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that did not make it into the film: Neville visiting his parents at St Mungo’s Hospital. He said he had wanted the scene included, but that time and budget constraints kept it out. Lewis hopes a new adaptation will give that moment room.

That comment shows he remains interested in how Neville’s story might be told; it does not mean he has announced plans to reprise the role. It is a hope about an omitted part of the story, not confirmation of his involvement in a new production.
