The Harris-Walz campaign ad is called “Monster.” Released on September 18, 2024, it features Hadley Duvall and uses Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over” as its soundtrack. Reports establish that the song appears in the ad, but not the terms of any music license or agreement.

What is the “Monster” ad about?

The ad centers on Hadley Duvall, a Kentucky woman who shared that she became pregnant at 12 after being raped by her stepfather. The campaign presented her story in an ad about reproductive freedom and abortion access following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Those descriptions reflect the ad’s political framing, not a complete account of abortion law.

Contemporaneous reporting identified the spot as “Monster” and reported its release on September 18, 2024. Billboard’s report describes Duvall’s role and the use of Eilish’s song.

Did Billie Eilish endorse Harris and Walz?

Yes. Billie Eilish and her brother and musical collaborator Finneas endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz shortly before the ad appeared. Billboard reported that they cited reproductive freedom, the planet, and democracy as reasons for their support. The endorsement provides political context, but it does not establish the scope or terms of the campaign’s permission to use the song.

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
  • Billie Eilish's third studio album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, released via Darkroom/Interscope Records is her most daring body of work to date, a diverse yet cohesive collection of songs - ideally listened to in its entirety from beginning to end - does exactly as the album title suggests; hits you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically, while bending genres and defying trends along the way

What did Billie Eilish say about “When the Party’s Over”?

The Recording Academy covered the song on October 20, 2018, describing it as a piano-led duet released as Eilish teased her debut album. In that coverage, Eilish explained the title’s origin in a difficult phone conversation after a party: “It’s not really, ‘I’m sad,’ you know what I mean? So ‘When The Party’s Over,’ I feel like that’s such a sentence.”

The song’s intimate mood sits in striking contrast with the ad’s political message. That juxtaposition is an interpretation of how the soundtrack and visuals work together; there is no cited statement establishing why the campaign selected this particular song.

Does “lends” mean Eilish personally authorized the song?

Not necessarily. Reports say the ad uses “When the Party’s Over,” but they do not specify the licensing arrangement or establish whether Eilish personally approved the use. The headline shorthand that she “lends” the song should not be read as confirmation of a contract, direct involvement, or particular terms.
