The change is fictional, not a medical phenomenon; as the story unfolds, similar transformations begin appearing in other people.
What happens to Anders?
The novel opens with Anders trying to make sense of a reflection he does not recognize. He initially looks for an explanation that will make the change seem like an illusion, but the altered appearance remains. The experience unsettles his sense of who he is and how he sees himself. Scroll.in’s published excerpt introduces this fantastical event as the book’s starting point.

Is the transformation real?
It is real within the novel’s speculative premise, not a documented real-world event or medical condition. Anders’s change is not isolated for long: the book’s publisher describes similar transformations surfacing elsewhere and people responding with fear and resistance. Penguin Random House’s US listing frames the unfolding story around identity, race, love, loss, and change.
Who is involved, and what is the story about?
Anders shares the secret with Oona, an old friend who has become his lover. As the changes spread, their relationship and their ties to others are tested. The publisher presents their growing connection as an opening to see themselves and one another anew; Penguin Random House India describes the novel as speculative fiction concerned with human connection, love, loss, and identity.
#1 Best Overall
Hamid described the book’s outlook in Penguin Random House India’s August 4, 2022 announcement: “It is a book not just about loss, but about hope and optimism, about a new kind of world being born.” This is the author’s framing of the novel, rather than a promise that its characters experience the transformation simply or uniformly.
