Spoilers for the first season finale of IT: Welcome to Derry. Dick Hallorann survives and leaves Derry for London, where he plans to try working as a chef. It is a deliberate step toward the character associated with The Shining, not a trip to the Overlook Hotel: showrunner Jason Fuchs says Hallorann has more adventures and personal challenges ahead of him first.
Does Dick Hallorann die in Welcome to Derry?
No. Hallorann survives the season-one finale. After helping the Hanlons, he tells Leroy that he is leaving Derry. The finale gives him a next destination rather than a death scene or an immediate arrival at the Overlook.

Where is Hallorann going at the end?
Hallorann says he is going to London to try working as a chef. That choice deliberately points toward his later association with the Overlook’s kitchen in The Shining. Fuchs said the writers considered other destinations, including Colorado and Key West, but chose London to suggest that Hallorann had completed one stage of his journey without yet becoming the man audiences know from The Shining. TV Insider’s finale interview with the creators discusses the departure and its intended meaning.
Does the finale send him straight to the Overlook Hotel?
No. The season ends before Hallorann reaches the Overlook. Fuchs described a gap between the end of the series and the beginning of The Shining: “It felt like there was still story, there was still stuff that he’s going to go through – adventures and demons to face between the end of our show and the beginning of The Shining.” In other words, the chef plan is a connection to his later life, not an on-screen handoff to the hotel.

How does Welcome to Derry connect Hallorann to The Shining?
The series gives a younger Hallorann a substantial story in Derry and ends with a chef-related ambition that foreshadows his later role. The show’s creators describe him as a character who changes over time, rather than someone already fully formed as the Hallorann seen in The Shining.
Director and executive producer Andy Muschietti explained that the series offered “a great opportunity to show that he might have been very different in his younger years, and there’s a transformation in the character.” The creators also describe a backstory in which Hallorann used his psychic ability to cheat at poker, was caught while serving in the military, and was bailed out by General Shaw for a specific mission. Muschietti said that this history helps explain why Hallorann has “no other choice but to unleash ‘the shining’” to follow the general’s mandate. These are details of the show’s characterization; they should not be treated as details established by King’s books. The Television Academy’s interview with the creators covers the series’ approach to Hallorann and his ability.

How does the show fit with Stephen King’s books and the It films?
Welcome to Derry is framed as a prequel to the It films released in 2017 and 2019, with its story set in 1962. Hallorann also appears in the larger world of King’s It novel: his connection to the Black Spot is mentioned briefly there. The series expands that connection into a prominent screen character whose supernatural ability is woven into the Derry plot.
That distinction matters: the series adapts and elaborates on source material, but its dramatized backstory is not automatically part of every book continuity. The Television Academy notes that Stephen King reads scripts and watches episodes, while also describing him as not directly involved in writing or production. For more on the series premise and its younger Hallorann, see TV Insider’s interview with Andy Muschietti.

What to read or watch next
For the later Overlook connection, read The Shining, where Hallorann is associated with the hotel and its kitchen. To compare the Derry material with King’s source fiction, look at the Black Spot passage in It. The screen series’ expanded younger-Hallorann arc is best understood as part of its film-prequel continuity, rather than as a scene-by-scene reproduction of either novel.
