The focal date is June 16; in 2026, the James Joyce Centre’s festival ran June 11–16, with events ranging from literary walks and readings to performances, museum visits and neighbourhood gatherings. For a future visit, check that year’s official programme: dates, venues, ticketing and event formats can change.
What happens on Bloomsday in Dublin?
Bloomsday takes the novel’s Dublin setting into the city itself. Rather than one central ceremony, the 2026 festival programme spread events across Dublin and its suburbs, inviting visitors to encounter Joyce’s city through literature, performance and place.
The programme included walking tours such as “Introducing Joyce’s Dublin” and “Footsteps of Leopold Bloom,” readings, music, theatre, exhibitions, tours and food and drink events. It also featured events at MoLI, Sweny’s Pharmacy and the James Joyce Tower & Museum, as well as neighbourhood “Bloomsday Villages.” Dublin City Libraries separately listed readings, performances, talks and library events during June 11–17. These are examples from 2026, not a guarantee of next year’s schedule.

| Approach | What it offers | What to check for a future festival |
|---|---|---|
| Join a guided walk | A route through Joyce-related Dublin, with literary context; 2026 examples included “Footsteps of Leopold Bloom” and “Introducing Joyce’s Dublin.” | Route, duration, meeting point, accessibility and booking requirements. |
| Attend a reading or performance | A way to experience the novel and its world through spoken word, theatre or music. Readings and performances appeared in the 2026 programme and Dublin City Libraries listings. | Venue, start time, ticketing and whether the event is suitable for newcomers. |
| Visit a Joyce-related institution | Museums and other literary sites connect the writing to Dublin’s history and places. MoLI, Sweny’s Pharmacy and the James Joyce Tower & Museum featured in 2026 listings. | Opening hours, admission, tour availability and travel time; confirm directly with the venue. |
| Explore a neighbourhood event | “Bloomsday Villages” and local library events offer a less tour-centred way to follow celebrations around the city and suburbs. | Exact location and programme, since neighbourhood events and venues may vary by year. |
You do not need to follow a full itinerary to take part. A single walk, reading or venue visit can make a focused day; combining events requires checking locations and timings so that travel across Dublin does not squeeze out the experience.
Why celebrate Joyce’s novel in Dublin?
Ulysses unfolds over one day in Dublin in 1904, and Bloomsday’s June 16 date reflects the day on which the novel is set. The city’s streets and institutions give readers a way to connect the book’s imagined journey with its real setting.
MoLI—the Museum of Literature Ireland, located in UCD Newman House—holds Copy No. 1 of Ulysses, inscribed by Joyce. MoLI also notes that Joyce graduated from the university in 1902. Its event page quotes Joyce as wanting to “give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book.”
A 2026 example: MoLI’s Bloomsday Garden Party
MoLI’s 2026 Garden Party was scheduled for June 16, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The museum listed a €20 ticket for non-members and complimentary admission for MoLI members, with live music and a special cocktail provided in partnership with Teeling Whiskey Distillery. Those were the event’s 2026 details only; check MoLI’s current listings for future dates, prices and arrangements.
