Bridgerton Season 5 centers on Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling, and takes inspiration from Julia Quinn’s sixth novel, When He Was Wicked. The book’s Francesca romance is with Michael—John’s cousin—not Michaela, so it offers source material rather than a scene-by-scene preview. Netflix’s announced setup has Francesca returning to the marriage mart two years after John’s death, just as Michaela comes back to London; the season is expected in 2027, with no exact premiere date announced.
Which book is Bridgerton Season 5 based on?
Netflix says Season 5 is inspired by Julia Quinn’s When He Was Wicked, the sixth novel in the Bridgerton series. It is Francesca’s story. The next book in printed order is not the next season’s source: To Sir Phillip, With Love, Eloise’s story, is book five. Quinn’s official page for When He Was Wicked identifies it as the sixth book, while her page for To Sir Phillip, With Love identifies that novel as book five.
Season order does not simply follow book order. Netflix has chosen Francesca’s story for Season 5 despite Eloise’s novel preceding it in the series.
What happens in the book?
Michael loves Francesca before she marries John
In When He Was Wicked, Michael Stirling falls in love with Francesca when she is about to marry his cousin, John. Michael does not act on those feelings, and Francesca marries John.

Grief and friendship shape what follows
After John dies, Michael becomes the earl. Francesca sees him as a trusted friend, while he continues to hide his love for her. Quinn’s synopsis frames the romance as developing through grief, friendship and restrained desire. That is the book’s emotional foundation; it does not establish which particular scenes or events the television season will use.

How does the show change the story?
The book’s romantic counterpart for Francesca is Michael Stirling. The television series changes Michael to Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza opposite Hannah Dodd’s Francesca. Netflix describes their pairing as the show’s first same-gender central love story. The change means the novel provides a point of comparison, not a guarantee that its relationship or plot will transfer unchanged.
Netflix’s announced Season 5 synopsis gives the screen setup: two years after John’s death, Francesca returns to the marriage mart for practical reasons. Michaela’s return to London complicates those plans and prompts Francesca to reckon with her inner passions. The synopsis does not disclose a final resolution, episode-by-episode events or exact dialogue.

The novel helps explain the emotional ingredients associated with Francesca’s story: bereavement, closeness with John’s cousin, and feelings held back over time. Netflix’s screen version retains a connection to the book but has changed the counterpart to Michaela and has its own established timeline and characterization.
