Resetting the Netflix app usually signs you out and deletes downloads stored on that device. It does not normally cancel your subscription or delete your Netflix account. The result depends on what “reset” refers to: an app reset, a password change, restarting a canceled membership, and factory-resetting a TV or streaming device are different actions.
What does “reset Netflix” mean?
Before choosing a reset, check where the option appears. A control inside Netflix generally affects the app session; a control in your TV or streaming device’s system settings may reset the whole device and erase much more.
| Action | What it does | Typical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Reset or refresh the Netflix app | Clears local app state on the affected device. | You are usually signed out and downloads on that device are removed. Netflix app reset guidance |
| Sign out | Ends the Netflix session on that device. | You must sign in again; signing out does not cancel membership. Netflix membership and cancellation guidance |
| Reset the password | Changes the account credential. | If you choose to sign out all devices, each device must authenticate again. Netflix password guidance |
| Restart a canceled membership | Reactivates an account Netflix still recognizes. | Billing may resume or the billing date may change; retained account information depends on the account state. Netflix restart guidance |
| Factory-reset the TV or streaming device | Restores the device to its factory state. | It may erase apps, Wi-Fi details, settings, and other saved data. Netflix device troubleshooting |
What happens when you reset the Netflix app?
An app reset is a local troubleshooting step, not an account deletion. On the affected device, expect to be signed out and to lose Netflix downloads stored there. You will need the account email or phone number and password to sign in again. Downloads on other devices are not necessarily affected.
Profiles, My List, and viewing information are associated with the Netflix account rather than being simply local app files. Resetting one app does not normally erase them. Downloaded titles, however, are temporary offline app data, not permanent purchases. Removing them frees space, but downloading them again uses data unless you are on Wi-Fi, and a title must still be available and supported for downloads. Check download preferences after reinstalling if needed.

Clearing cache is not always the same as clearing app storage. Cache generally refers to temporary files; clearing storage or data removes more of the app’s local state and can remove downloads and sign you out. The exact controls and effects vary by operating system, device maker, model, and app version.
Does resetting Netflix cancel your subscription or delete your account?
No. Resetting the app, signing out, or deleting the Netflix app does not cancel the membership, according to Netflix. Billing can continue normally after an app reset. To stop billing, use Cancel Membership in the account flow or cancel through the provider that bills you; partner, package, and app-store subscriptions may have separate controls.
Canceling membership is different from deleting the account. A local app reset does not ordinarily remove the account from Netflix’s servers, and you can sign back in with the same credentials. If Netflix no longer finds an old account and you create a new one, the new account will not automatically contain the prior profiles, My List, or game saves. Netflix explains the restart and account-retention cases.

What happens to profiles, My List, recommendations, and history?
For an ordinary app reset or sign-out, profiles, My List, recommendations, and viewing activity are not normally erased; they remain tied to the account. This is distinct from data stored locally on one device, such as offline downloads.

Netflix states that viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and game saves are retained for 24 months after account closure; this is Netflix’s stated policy and may change or vary by region. Restarting an account and account closure and membership information provide the relevant details.
When can resetting help—and when will it not?
Refreshing local app data can help if stale or corrupted data is causing a sign-in loop, loading problem, or connection error. Signing in again also helps reveal whether the device had been using the wrong account. Resetting may remove corrupted local downloads and recover device storage. Netflix lists app reset, sign-out, reinstalling, and device restart among troubleshooting measures for certain issues: app reset, connection troubleshooting, and Netflix troubleshooting.

A reset is not a general fix for slow internet, a Netflix-wide outage, unsupported hardware, a payment problem, an inactive membership, or a network issue involving VPN, DNS, or firewall settings. If the account is on hold or the membership is inactive, resolve the billing issue or restart the membership instead. Netflix’s reinstall and account troubleshooting guidance identifies inactive membership and payment problems as possible causes.
How to reset Netflix with the least disruption
Try less disruptive actions first. This avoids deleting downloads or wiping device settings when a simple restart may be enough.
- Check that the membership is active and there is no payment issue.
- Close and reopen Netflix.
- Restart the phone, TV, or streaming device.
- Sign out of Netflix and sign in again.
- Reset or reload Netflix if the app offers that control.
- Clear app storage or reinstall only if the earlier steps do not help.
- Consider a factory reset of the whole device only as a last resort.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings, then locate Netflix—on some iOS versions, first open Apps.
- Open Netflix’s settings and use its Reset control if available.
- Reopen Netflix and sign in.
Netflix documents this reset for certain iPhone and iPad sign-in problems; it deletes local downloads and signs you out. Settings labels can vary by iOS version. See Netflix’s iPhone and iPad reset steps.

Android phone or tablet
- Press and hold the Netflix app icon and tap App info.
- Tap Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear storage or the equivalent option, then confirm.
- Open Netflix and sign in again.
This removes downloads and signs you out. Menu names vary by Android manufacturer and version; have your password ready. Netflix’s Android instructions provide its documented path.
TV or streaming device
If Netflix opens, its general sign-out route is through the Netflix home screen: press Back to open the menu, choose the profile icon or Get Help, then select Sign out and confirm. Sign in again to test the app. Menu labels differ across devices. On some error screens the option is under More Details and may say Sign out or Reset.
If the normal menu is unavailable, Netflix documents this remote sequence for some devices: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. A recovery menu may offer Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate. The sequence and controls are device-dependent, not guaranteed on every television or player. See Netflix device troubleshooting and Netflix sign-out guidance.

Reinstalling Netflix or resetting the whole device
Uninstalling and reinstalling Netflix signs you out and removes downloads saved in the app on that device. It does not cancel the membership. Netflix’s reinstall instructions describe these effects. A factory reset of the TV or streaming device is a separate, broader action: it may erase apps, settings, Wi-Fi information, and other data, and require setup again. Use the device maker’s instructions and do this only when app-level troubleshooting is insufficient.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if you meant resetting your password?
An app reset does not change your password. Use Netflix’s login-help process to change it. If you suspect someone else has account access, choose the option to sign out all devices, use a unique password, and sign back in only on trusted devices. This is a security measure; merely resetting the app does not sign every device out. Netflix’s password guidance says email reset links expire after 24 hours and SMS codes after 20 minutes. Netflix also notes that you cannot change a password while using a Kids profile; switch to another profile first.
What if you canceled Netflix and want to come back?
That is a membership restart, not an app reset. Sign in to the account Netflix recognizes and choose the available Restart Membership option. Retained profiles, My List, game saves, and payment information may be present, but the billing date may stay the same or change to the restart date depending on the account state. An unpaused membership may be charged immediately; partner billing can work differently. Check the billing provider shown on the account before assuming Netflix directly controls the charge. See Netflix membership restart guidance and membership and billing guidance.
If Netflix cannot find the account, check that you entered the right email address and that it is spelled correctly. If the account is no longer retained and you create a new one, old account information will not automatically transfer. Netflix’s stated 24-month retention period for specified account information is described above and is a policy that can change.
