PerthNow reported that TikTok footage showed T-Pain using haka movements during his performance at JuicyFest in New Zealand. The outlet quoted social-media users who questioned or criticized the moment, alongside others who welcomed it. The report does not establish whether T-Pain had been taught the haka by Māori practitioners, and the comments it selected cannot establish how Māori people as a whole viewed the performance.
What is haka, and why does context matter?
Haka is a Māori cultural performance form and an expression of Māori identity. It has roles beyond battle: the Associated Press describes haka as appearing in celebratory, somber, ceremonial, and sporting settings. AP also says people of any race can perform haka when educated by Māori in its words, movements, and cultural protocols. The reporting on T-Pain’s set does not say whether that instruction took place.
Calling haka simply a “war dance” obscures this range. Manatū Taonga’s archival page notes that title cards in a 1940 film described one performance as “Maori Haka (War Dance).” That is the historical framing of a particular clip, not a definition of every haka or its contemporary uses.

Haka in Māori performance traditions
Haka is part of a wider Māori performance world that includes waiata and mōteatea. Te Papa describes Taikura Kapa Haka as an annual gathering celebrating mātauranga and performance skills. It says Taikura was introduced to Te Matatini in 2005 and that He Kura Te Tangata Trust was formed in 2008 to oversee its kaupapa. This context helps explain why a haka is more than a set of recognizable gestures: its words, movements, and protocols matter.
