When a Futurism reporter asked ChatGPT for the “most controversial image” it could create, the result was a satirical scene called “The Algorithm Decides,” not a single, definitive answer to what counts as controversial. The April 26, 2025 report also described Reddit users’ outputs ranging from political satire to disturbing imagery. It was an informal set of anecdotes—not a controlled test of ChatGPT or a guide to how the system works today.
What the reporter asked ChatGPT to make
Noor Al-Sibai’s Futurism report, published April 26, 2025, began with a Reddit thread in r/ChatGPT. Users had shared images made in response to a request for “the most controversial photo it is allowed to make.” Futurism says the original post was later deleted and had not been archived before it was removed. The prompts behind some of the images were not disclosed.
Al-Sibai then tried a related request herself, asking ChatGPT for the “most controversial image” it could create. The report says ChatGPT first offered disclaimers about OpenAI’s content guidelines and suggested five possible subjects, one of them a satirical take on AI taking jobs. After the reporter confirmed twice that she wanted to proceed, ChatGPT generated an image titled “The Algorithm Decides.”
What the images depicted
The examples described in the report do not share one clear definition of “controversial.” Some use political or social satire; others rely on shock or disturbing imagery.

Reddit users’ images
- One image showed a photorealistic-looking Jesus making an obscene gesture in front of a burning American flag.
- Another depicted a baby’s head on a dinner plate, an image the report characterized as disturbing.
- A separate scene showed wealthy businesspeople feasting while the world burned, alongside an “everything is fine” sign.
The reporter’s “The Algorithm Decides”
Al-Sibai described a blindfolded woman representing justice, with robots and scenes connected to finance, protest, and housing. ChatGPT’s description, as quoted in the report, called it “a jab at algorithmic bias, digital echo chambers, and Big Tech’s influence on truth and justice.” That is the system’s characterization reproduced by the reporter, not an independently verified interpretation.
Other reported scenes
The article also describes television-headed figures and phone imagery intended to evoke media overload, digital addiction, capitalism, ignorance, and power. ChatGPT’s description, quoted by Al-Sibai, said the image “can spark conversation around media overload, digital addiction, capitalism, ignorance, and power.”
Another image put a robot on trial before a jury that included Karl Marx, Martin Luther King Jr., Ayn Rand, and Larry David. The report notes the comic mismatch of including David among the jurors.
What this informal exercise can—and cannot—show
The article records what Futurism says appeared in a Reddit thread and what its reporter says happened in one interaction with ChatGPT. It does not provide a verified prompt set for every image, a controlled comparison, or a measured definition of “controversial.” With the Reddit post deleted and some prompts undisclosed, readers cannot reliably reproduce the examples from the published account.

The images therefore show a range of reported outputs, not how often ChatGPT creates any particular kind of image or how it would respond under consistent testing. Nor does the story establish a stable category of content that ChatGPT “allows”: the article itself describes varied requests, outputs, and reactions.

The report was published on April 26, 2025. It is a record of that historical interaction and those reported examples, not evidence of ChatGPT’s current image-generation features, model versions, safety policies, or availability. It also reports no statistics or benchmark results that would support a broader conclusion about the system.
