Harlene Rosen was Woody Allen’s first wife. They married in 1956 and separated several years later, and the breakup became part of Allen’s public comedy and a reported defamation dispute. After that, she largely stayed out of public view. The available sources do not establish where she lives or what she does today. The one later glimpse of her comes from a secondary account of biographer David Evanier’s research for his 2015 book.
Who Harlene Rosen was to Woody Allen
Rosen was Allen’s first wife. A publisher-hosted chronology in Woody Allen: A Casebook, edited by Kimball King and issued by Routledge (Taylor & Francis) in 2001, gives March 15, 1956, as the wedding date. That is the most specific marriage date in the sources reviewed, and it is the one to use if you need a single fixed point.
Her name tends to come up in discussions of Allen’s early personal life and the jokes he later made about his first marriage. The record, however, is almost entirely about Allen. Rosen appears as the subject of his material and of the legal dispute, not as a speaker on her own history.
When the marriage ended: the dates disagree
Separation and divorce are not the same event, and the sources reviewed do not treat them the same way. The table below sets out what each account says and where it stops.
#1 Best Overall
| Source | Wedding | Separation | Formal divorce |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woody Allen: A Casebook (Routledge/Taylor & Francis, 2001), chronology | March 15, 1956 | Not stated | 1961 |
| Other retrieved biographical account | 1956 (as described in the sources reviewed) | 1959 | 1962 |
Because these two accounts conflict on the divorce year, the safe statement is that the couple married in 1956 and separated several years later. Do not cite a single divorce year as settled unless a primary record, such as a court filing, is located and checked. None of the sources reviewed reproduces one.
The defamation dispute
Secondary accounts link the breakup to a reported defamation dispute involving Rosen and Allen’s public comments about her. The details of the claim are described unevenly across these accounts, and the sources reviewed do not establish a court ruling, a settlement, or an outcome. Treat any specific allegation, amount or procedural step as unconfirmed unless it is traced to a court document or a reporting outlet that names its source.

Life after Allen: what the record shows
This is where the public record thins out. The sources reviewed do not establish:
- her current residence or location
- any occupation or public work since the divorce
- any later marriage or relationship
- family circumstances, age, or financial position
The single later data point is a secondary account, published by The Time Easy under the headline “Harlene Rosen: The Life Story of Woody Allen’s First Wife,” which reports that David Evanier located Rosen while researching Woody: The Biography and that she sent a message for the book in 2015. That account is not a primary source, and it does not reproduce the message in full. What it offers is a sense that Rosen was willing to speak to a biographer decades after the marriage, not a picture of her life in the years since.

What is and is not documented about Rosen
Several claims about Rosen circulate more widely than the sources support, so it helps to separate them.
- Documented: She was Allen’s first wife; they married in 1956; they later separated; a legal dispute was reported.
- Documented with a conflict: The divorce year (1961 in the casebook chronology, 1962 in the other account).
- Reported but not established: the particulars of the defamation claim and any outcome.
- Not established: where she lives, what she does, and how she has spent the decades since the divorce.
There is also no verbatim Rosen quotation in the sources reviewed. The TIME excerpt of Evanier’s book is useful for Allen’s background, but it does not supply words from Rosen. Anything presented as her direct speech should be treated as unverified.

Reading the book that connects to this story
If you want more on the relationship, the most relevant book in the sources reviewed is Woody: The Biography by David Evanier, published by St. Martin’s Press. It is a biography of Allen, not a memoir by Rosen, so it is best read for Allen’s life and career context. It is not a reliable record of Rosen’s private life.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Suggested wording for readers and editors
A fair one-paragraph summary is: Harlene Rosen married Woody Allen in 1956 and they separated several years later. A legal dispute was reported, but the sources reviewed do not establish its outcome. Rosen largely left public view, and the available record does not reliably establish where she lives or what she does today.
